Construction Tip
« on: July 21, 2019, 03:55:47 pm »
I haven't introduced myself officially, but thought this might be a good time to share one of my discoveries as far as amp cabinets or speaker cabinets go - bee hives. I buy mine from Mann Lake. They come unassembled. They are white pine with dovetails, available in a choice of qualities - select grade is $21.50 (sometimes less), and the long side of the rectangular hive body is exactly 17" inside - perfect for a 17" chassis, and the short side is about 14", great for a 10" speaker, although it will accommodate a 12". They have handholds cut into them , but can be put together inside out to have a smooth outer surface (you do have to trim 5/8" of depth to do that to all sides). I use them on my projects (it's a hobby, low-dough works great for me). Hope that is helpful.

For those of us who never messed with bee hives:
https://www.mannlakeltd.com/shop-all-categories/hive-components

OUTSIDE DIMENSIONS
10 Frame 16¼" x 19-7⁄8"
8 Frame 14" x 19-7⁄8"
There's top and bottom covers. The top is tin, not cheap, and I don't see a use for indoor gear-boxes. The bottom is thin ply with a hole, a bee door/floor, not a speaker panel. There's lots of other detailing that doesn't seem useful, but fun to look at.

...amp cabinets or speaker cabinets...bee hives.
Thanks for the tip! I would never have thought of this one in a million years.

My favourite budget cabinet was an IKEA RAST night-stand, which was solid pine and close to the size of a Princeton Reverb. Unfortunately, IKEA seems to have discontinued it now. (Most of their other solid-pine items are disappearing from the catalogue, too.)

Doug,

Don't build this combo cab from bee hive material.  It's sure to attract BEARS in your neck of the woods!!!  🐻
