Phoenix project question.
« on: September 20, 2019, 08:50:06 am »
A friend has asked me to build him an AB763 Deluxe Lite in a head configuration, so I thought, why not do a little extra and build Steve's  Phoenix Dual Lite amp. My question is, How does the amp sound when you mix the two circuits...I know he will ask me this.

Just tell him it sounds great, very full, and plenty of tone options to blend together. Well worth the extra $25 for parts. I don't think anyone that likes the AB763 sound will be disappointed with the Ampeg sound.

I really didn't spend much time playing the two channels together, other than to make sure there were no bad sounding surprised. I was more focused on comparing the Ampeg and Fender channels. The Fender sounds like any of the AB763 but the smaller BandMaster size OT I used gives it a bit of hair when pushed. Think CCR sound. The Ampeg has a clean warm sound with full bottom if you want. Not as mid scooped or in your face as the Fender. I was playing a 335 through a Gemini II in the early '70s with a country band. Our hard stuff was various CCR, Hollies "Long Cool Woman, Tony Joe White "Polk Salad Annie". The Ampeg did a good job with those sounds.

Maybe Ed will chime in. He knows how my Hampeg sounds and will be able to describe it better. It's the same preamp and the power amp is very similar but using a cathodyne PI driving 7591s instead of 6L6s.
A schematic, layout, and hi-rez pics are very useful for troubleshooting your amp. Don't wait to be asked. JUST DO IT!

Thanks Steve. I will build this for 6V6 tubes instead of the 6L6. So my Transformers will be a little different. So some difference but still should be a good amp. Most likely I will select the OT same as the Fender Deluxe. May up the Wattage rating some. Not sure just yet.
