4 4 0 PPIMV or vvr ax84
« on: September 23, 2019, 03:22:25 pm »
Hello,

I want to lower the db level. Im thinking of either a type 2 ppimv or a vvr. Anyone has experience with this particular amp? please advise and explain why the one or the other would be better.

for type 2 PPIMV - which part of the circuit would be best to put it in without too much modification? 4 4 0 uses a 6sn7gtb as a power tube.

I want to lower the db level.

to what guitar drives speaker?  If I'm seeing the layout correct it's a SE amp ~ what 1/3W

ppimv
IF it is an SE amp, there are no PI's to be had  :icon_biggrin:

It is 2 watt yet extremely loud. I rhink i will use a od pedal un front of it than to mod it.

However, the amp buzzes when picked hard. Soft pick sounds great. Should i use 16ohm output to a 8 ohm spkr?

The amp sounds very hot. Bias is at 9ma for both sides.

Any recommendations for softening the harshness???

Thank you.

I'm not a player so...
I played My Sons with a Gibson (whatever pickups those use:)
couldn't bond, played basically like you're describing, I told him to sell it n buy my SE KT88  :icon_biggrin:

If you post a schematic i'll look, I don't follow layouts well

Have you considered talking with the guys over at ax84?

Been a while since I looked at this amp. It is a 2 Watt Push/Pull amp that is a take off of the Trainwreck amp. It is extremely high gain just like a Trainwreck. If you didn't get the layout correct and the lead dress correct you will have trouble..Try rolling back on your guitar volume control and see what happens. Big discussion going on over on TAG about a 4 4 0. At just 2 Watts it will peal the paint off of the Wall when pushed.

A couple of things you can try...per Sluckey, put a 50K pot in series with the 10K PI tail resistor....Change the 12AX7's to 12AU7's
both of these will change the volume out a lot...but then it will not be a 4 4 0. This is a beast of a small high gain amp. It is what it is.

What about to use a Power Brake ?

The circuit will remain the same and preserv it's character

2W will not be difficult to tame this way

the 50k pot made a huge difference how the amp feels right now. its more spongy and as if the tone has more depth now. and the od is more in control and less spikey. thank you so much guys.
