5E3 Chassis getting very hot
« on: July 01, 2020, 03:02:39 pm »
Hi everyone.

I was playing for about a couple of hours or more experimenting with a reverb pedal. I finished and went to turn the amp off. I noticed a bit of heat radiating from the chassis. When i touched it it was very hot. Hot enough that i couldn't keep my hand there for 10 to 15 seconds. The amp sounds great btw and from what I know is the amp is stock. I only added some diodes on the rectifier tube based on the robinette mod page that suggests using these to act as a protection in case the tube goes out.

Also i took out the standby switch.

Is it normal for it to be this hot? I guess the main question also is is this safe?

It's got a 3 prong plug and I'm sure you have a fire extinguish  :icon_biggrin:

guessing it's fine for 2 hours play, If you're concerned verify the PA is biased reasonable  no melting tubes.  If you're really concerned calculate current at the 1st PS tap, look up the PT rating n see if it's at or above 100%

ferris metal tends to hold heat, weld up a couple 3" plates then time how long it takes to NOT smoke fingers
Went Class C for efficiency
