Finally finished P1 HO with a few mods
« on: December 11, 2020, 10:26:36 pm »
I started a P1 long time ago and then decided to turn it into a HO..

I built a walnut cab which is currently getting tru-oil coats so I'll update one more time with a finished pic and some audio clips

I also built a 1x12 cab from scratch but I'll make a separate post for that

I added a clean jack which bypasses the first gain stage, and I also used the old schematic which has parallel sockets so you can run an EL84 or an octal. It sounds really good with the 6L6.

The chassis was a piece of steel I salvaged and notched with a die grinder.. But it looks ok inside the cab.   I'm just happy to have finished this thing. It sounds so good.  I basically tweaked all the values of the stages to jcm800 values.

I want to add a toggle to swap the 100k cold clipper to 39k like Soldano.. thanks robinette for the idea..

Very cool slabbage (is that a word?) on the top of that head cab.  Nice job

Beautiful cab.  Love to see grain like that.

And the joinery.   I've gotten bored with dovetails.    Nice!

I'm a hack at any sort of joinery.. I did all this with a crappy chop saw and my Rockwell table saw. The dowel technique has it's own charms,  and I thought the oak dowels looked pretty nice! I don't have the tooling to do actual finger or dovetail so I've built a cab for my recent firefly build in all maple with the dowels, and my 1x12 cab all pine with dowels and some ribs for the baffle.

I'm building a Carolina songbird plus which I'll share as well, cherry and walnut cab

Uhh, no.

Very nice looking.

I like using Baltic Birch plywood for cabs -- it is strong but relatively light, and you can use thinner material.  I love the striated end grain.

BUT, it is a pain in the neck to do dovetails or fingerjoints with the stuff due to the thin layers of wood (they tear out).   You could use biscuits to strengthen your joint, but the dowels look cool and should be incredibly strong.  Great idea.  Thanks!

Nothing wrong with those dowels IMHO. It's a solid method.  I have one of the Kreg pocket hole rigs, but I have yet to do any amp/cab work with it, just some home projects.  It's a good low cost option and it's invisible on the exterior of the build.
Gotta love baltic birch for strength and consistency.  But the tiny splinters will mess your hands up.

I appreciate all the looks and comments on the woodwork!

The amp turned out pretty quiet for what it is and what I didn't know when I started it.  I definitely like the 2 separate gain knobs, and it's really loud.  I built a vibro champ in a 1x12 box (there's some build pics also here) and caught the bug. I'll post my other build happening right now
