My CLONE of a Marshall Lead 12 amp
« on: April 03, 2014, 10:58:55 pm »
I came across my old scratch built clone of an old SS Marshall Lead 12 amp I built way back in '93. I had it working prior but never completed it all the way so I decided to finally finish it and mount it into a chassis. I did this originally when I was really into learning and creating electronics' things, not all musical, but the outcome was really good on this one. After all that time had passes I was pleasantly surprised how it sounded & turned out. I was also heavy into making & creating effects back then but got back into these too over the last few years with more modern designs. Maybe someday I'll actually mount it into a small cab or combo? But if it's anything like how long it's taken to do this, I "might" get that done before the next decade?  :l2:

Controls are: Hi/Lo inputs, Gain, Volume, Treble, Mid, Bass, and the switch is for speaker output, and finally a headphone jack (or direct out).

Ha!  I've got the Lead 12, 25th Anniversary Mini Stack in Silver!  That amp sounds surprisingly good through a 4x12!  Not so great through the 2, 1x8 stack...  I also know a lot of "big" players who threw away the speakers and used the head in a rack back in the day for a preamp. Nice work Jojo!

Jim
BTW, any more videos? :icon_biggrin:

Nice Jim! I don't have any 4x12 cabs anymore but I do have a 2x12. I'll have to give it a try. I mainly used it with a home made 1x12 w/ an old 100w Celestion in it. Overkill??? BTW, did you notice the name etched on it?

Videos? what? where?  :angel

You need to stuff that into a curly maple head box ala Tubenit!  That would be really cool!

I just noticed your settings, it appears that your gain knob must've been knocked off a bit? Everything else is set properly just how you like it!  :l2:

Ha, I'm surprised you can see anything through the dirt!  It's been in the basement for a while....  That little thing can make some racket!

OK, cats outta the bag. we all secretly delve into the dark side, &  fondle the SS knobs of the ''other side'', .. .. .     My name is Lawrence, and I too am an Ampoholic.   I  have known and abused amps of all wattage, (even gone to Watts to buy some of 'em)    Even just tonight I tasted the vile guilty pleasure of my very own   WAIT FOR IT))....princeton 75.

I keep it in the bowl of the toilet, wrapped in plastic, and creosote, and the depth of my depravity is that I will unwrap, scrape off the gunk  until a usable portion is unearthed, plug in, and wail away.....at endless sustain, 200times amplified transistor fizzyness!!!  at volumes so low as to not alert anyone to my sickness.

I had to get it off my chest/back, but with the grace of Telefunken/Amperex, and other ampoholics  I too will know the peace that others have known.

guess that means I shouldn't have any dealings with you heathens unless I find a sponsor. Wonder what Slash is doing.....
keep on with those scales and that fish is gonna die, if it don't bite you first!

never fried a tranny ..till I built a dim bulb tester. UPDATE-haven't fried anything since learning how to properly build & use one...thanks Uncle Doug, & el34 World

Hey!  Variety is the spice of life!  You have to figure out what you DONT like to know what you DO like!  That's better than saying "I saw on the internet that tubes sound the best.."  We have lived it brother!  I remember when Carvin dumped all their tube gear and just produced SS heads in the early 70's.  We saw how long that lasted!  How many other companies declared that they had the SS answer to the tube?  Here we are 40 years later and only Silvergun prefers modeling over tubes!   :icon_biggrin:

(class room) "Hi Lawrence!"

I kinda flamed a pedal company a while back when they advertised all of their pedals were 100% pure analog. Yes they can be both solid state and also analog too. This is where things can get a bit fuzzy or blurred and I confused analog with digital which requires converters. I wonder how many know that most all the new Marshalls, Fenders, etc. have all those transistors and op-amps in them?

All of the Tom Scholz effects are analog.  Yes, they are from the 80's, but they are the BEST sounding units I have ever used.  So yes, there is a HUGE difference between analog and digital.  But there are still misguided souls like Silvergun who prefer the onoffonoffonoffonoffonoffonoffonoff interpretation of his signal.  :icon_biggrin:
