 Fender Deluxe Reverb
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
 I need some opinions.

I'm trying to restore a deluxe reverb.
My dad bought it back '77 or '78, and was playing a guitar and bass through it, and something happened.
It started smoking, and quit playing.
After that, He put it out in the barn, and its sat there for years 'till today.I dug it out, and took a look at it and its in bad shape. The cabinet is just about gone, not counting what was wrong with it before. So, do ya'll think it will play again, or do I need to junk it.

Thanks.
Matt

Don't junk it. The best thing to do would be to post some photos for the folks here to look at. Especially the chassis internals and the transformers.

Nah, don't junk it. It CAN be resurrected. How do the internals look, esp the transformers?

Can ya'll tell me the best place to buy a cab? or would it be best to build one. I havn't had a chance to really check out the insides because I brought it in, and termites started crawling out so I took it back out.

Thanks.

Also, what is most likely to go out when a amp gets overpowed? ie:playing a guitar and bass at the same time.

Thanks.

 Matt,
there are any number of components which might be the culprit. As far as a cabinet is concerned, you can get one from any number of suppliers. You might contact the folks at Mojotone as they have many models in stock and can make a custom cabinet to fit your chassis.
www.mojotone.com
If you pull the chassis and take some digital photos of it inside and out, there are many very knowledgable folks in this forum who can help you through your problem. If something smoked, there is a good chance you will see physical evidence of the failed component when you pull the chassis. Relaying that information to this group will give us an idea of what section of the amp needs attention.

If the amp sat in a barn long enough for the cabinet to rot off, I'd say the transformers are shot. Still worth fixing, though. If it's a '77 or '78, it can be made lots better than new. I guess it all depends on how rusty the chassis is. Won't know till we see those pictures.
Good luck,
Dave

I really doubt I'll be able to post pictures because I don't have a digital camera. The cabinet didn't rot off, termites ate it up.But the bottom of the chassis looks pretty good, but I havn't opened it up yet.

Thanks for the info.

I also recommend mojo cabinets. A friend just picked one up and the quality seems very good. Also, check ebay. There are often both vintage and fender reissue cabinets for sale without a chassis.

As for getting the electronics going again, I think it's safe to say that it can be fixed without a doubt. But depending on how bad it is, it may take a lot of work. Anyway, quality replacement parts are available once you track down what you need, and the net is overflowing with information on old Fender amps to guide you along.

I think most people want to see pictures for two reasons. One is to help you figure out what is fried, but also to see how much other work you'll need to do to get it going.

I think rust is your first concern. Is the chassis rusted? Do the transformers have rust on them? Is the faceplate clean? Any big dents or damage? What does it look like on the inside? Any crazy pest infestations in there? :)

 Hey Matt,
If you have a regular camera and a scanner , you can get around the lack of a digital camera.
Good luck with it.

also, any photo developing place will take regular film and put in on a cd very cheaply.

 Matt,

Check out this guy for cabinets too. He did a Deluxe Reverb for me with a custom 2x10 baffle and it turned out very nice. His prices are better than others as well.

He also puts stuff on eBay once in a while.
