1985 Roadster
« on: March 29, 2024, 04:47:29 pm »
Did a little body work on my '85 roadster today. Replaced the left head light assembly, left front wheel, and repaired the windshield. Still has some road rash on it but at least it's road worthy again. Gonna put it way up high in the den, away from juvenile drivers...   :icon_biggrin:

I'm working on a couple airplanes. Probably just put pics in this thread.

Cool.

Around here there was an "MG TD" that was really a VW on the bottom and Wooden Boat type bodywork above. Can't find a picture on the web. Of course an old MG is mostly wood formwork under the alloy, but this was all MG-shape varnish wood with VW axles and muffler hanging out.

Very nice. How'd you fab that headlamp?  I started building models last fall to help pass the long winter.  I tell the guys at work that I painted my '69 camaro over the weekend and they go I didn't you had one of those, then I show them a photo   I do them in an amateur club racer style. Everybody does the Penske etc big $ team look.  I want the average joe who just raced his local track or two and had a 9-5 during the week and pitted in the dirt. It's fun making little roll cages and the dump tube exhausts.

The headlamp is actually 3 pieces turned on my ShopSmith in lathe mode. The lense and mounting post were turned from a 1/2" birch dowel and the lamp housing was a scrap of walnut. The entire car was built on my ShopSmith. The main body is mahogany and accessories are walnut and maple. The plans came from a ShopSmith magazine called Hands On. The magazine was a collection of woodworking 'how tos' and detailed project plans, all designed for us to buy more ShopSmith accessories. Magazines were the 'internet' back in the '80s.

Your cars are very realistic looking. A lot of detail. Looks like a lot of fun work.

Impressive.  I used to work with a guy that had a Shopsmith at home. He took the bait at one of those live demo's they used to do at the malls.  Trouble is he did not have the mind to actually be able to envision and create things.  It got used a few times then sat covered in the corner.  I sure know the magazine thing. Used to subscribe to 4 monthly motorcycle rags.  Cooks Illustrated and Vintage Guitar I still get now. I dislike on-line versions.

Planes are airworthy again. I had to repair the tails and landing gear on both. The P40 also got a new prop. I replaced the broken 3 blade prop with a tougher 2 blade prop. They're going up high too!  :icon_biggrin:

Rather than do separate pics I decided to do a collage. I call it Planes, Trains, and Automobiles,,, and stuff.

I found the entire collection of ShopSmith's Hands On magazine online. It was fun finding the plans for those wooden toys. I was able to find those two airplanes. They were famous! So I though I'd post a bigger picture.
