 6l6 vs el34
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
other than the slight pin out difference, can and amp running el84s with about 450-470 on the plates use 6l6's instead?
if so, any other changes need to be made?
thanks for you help

You'r talking about swaping from EL34 to 6L6, right?

rebias the amp, eventualy change the screen resitors to 450 ohm...

 Cris,
This is the first time I've heard anybody say change those screen resistors to 470ohms when switching from EL34's to 6L6's. I figure the 1K resistors are fine. Why do you suggest this??

I just imagined that you would have changed them  , I have no good reason to do it.

Probably it's not necessary. As the screen current is so low in a 6L6, there would not be a voltage drop that affects the functioning of the tubes.

Thanks. I've been trying to understand the screen resistor value "thing". So the EL34's draw more current and that is why the 1k is used???

EL 34s draw more heater current than 6L6s.
That's fine if you are swapping from El 34s to 6L6s, but not so good if you are going the other way.

 6550 vs el34
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
how about using 6550's in place of el34's
any one have a preference on sound for a
bass amp, b+ about 450-470.
i have bought a used sunn amp, old spectrum I
with el34's, i have extra 6l6's and 6550's.
trying to decide which to use.
thanks for the ideas
