single input jack on front. the kind that has a 1m resistor from tip to ground and shunts the tip to ground when there's no jack inserted. how do i add a second input jack to the rear of the unit with the ability to use either one?

Very carefully ;-)
A bus stops at a bus station. A train stops at a train station. On my desk, I have a work station.

You may need (?) a shielded wire too if the rear jack is too far from the input tube

Here's how to connect the 2 jacks, even if they're far apart

That creates a high and a low input.

If the goal is for neither input to have any signal reduction and for the input to be muted if neither input socket is used, and only one of the inputs to be in use at any time, then as I see it, special jack sockets with isolated switches will be required.
It will tend to make for a rather convoluted input circuit wiring arrangement.
