I just picked up a 2000s that needs work. I sent you pictures
First, I tested the tubes with my Sencor. Even though it’s a basic tester, at least it can tell me if a tube is good or bad.
The unit had 4 vintage Tung Sol 6550’s- 3 tested good and one bad. But I have a GE 6550 that could possibly take its place. Both the TS’s and GE are 42 watts.
The IEC 6An8 tested bad , but I have a GE . The Amperex 12ax7 tested good.
The first electrical test , using my Weber Bias rite, was to test each power tube socket. I wanted to see if it read voltage. They were al around 569 volts. I guess that’s a good sign that the OT may be ok.
I plugged the tubes in and all there was a loud hum. I had sound from either 4 or 8 ohm jack. I figured that it would be the caps, hopefully not more. . Then I started to measure.
Here’s the test measurements-
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Resistors-Carbon comp -
Silver (10%)-
Mounted to the can cap -
15k @ 17.3k
33k@ 36.2k
Power tubes – half were CC resistors, half stone
47 ohm- 50.7,50.5, 51, 50.8
The stones were marked 50ohm and they were spot on
5% (gold) resistors-
2 @ 47ohm read 51.4 ohms
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Large Non- polar caps
2- .25mf (10%) @ .28
Electrolytics-
2 @ 50uf ( silver body Mallory’s) - 1 @ 132 and the other measured “OL” no measurement
Sprague caps-
20uf@ 55
10uf@ 11.5710uf@ 38
Can cap- which is a 30, 20, 20, 20
Only the 30 and 1-20 was used
30 @ 41
20@ 31
20 @32.4
20 @ 32
At a first look, this amp looks untouched. It still has the 2 prong plug but some of the values are under the schematic
.
There’s a scenario I don't understand. The first filter cap is 20uf/600v off the standby to ground. That should of had at least a 30uf/600v value. The next section, for "A" after the chokes, are 2- 10uf's , in parallel , to make 20uf @ 600v. Then the "B" section is using the 30uf post . off the can cap. The "C" connection is using a 20uf post. The 2n'd and 3rd -20uf are not used. One should of been used for the "C" leg.
I'd appreciate any replacement value and filter cap suggestions .
Thanks for looking!
