 output transformer ?

I have a 65 twin reisue with Doug's AB763 board and Weber Chicago 12's in it. I want to replace the OT in it. I have heard good things about Mercury Magnetics. What about the ones Doug sells here? Does anyone have any input for me? Thanks!

Are the ones Doug sells here hand wound with a paper around the core? Is that really that important? Too many options and opinions out there. Anybody got some for me though ?

If you live in a humid environment paper wound may not be your best bet. The "theory" behind paper-wound is that the insulation is thinner, but, Dave Funk makes a very interesting point in his "Tube Amp Workbook"about Modern PVC being quite a bit thinner than paper. The original manufacturers did not use paper because of the tone, it was quite simply what was available at the time. I'm sure the tf's that Doug sells sound fine, without spending $250 for the MM....JMHO

 Hi!

How did the sound changes after you put in the Doug's AB763 board?

The tone is much more 3D and plausible in the physical listening environment. The tone was alive more, if that makes any sense. Plus, now i can mod all day and night easily!

Is the transformer I have on it now (the one that came with the reissue) that bad. The output tranny that is. Should I repalce it? Has anyone tried this? And if so Mercury magnetics, new sensor, or..............What?

I have no experience, but two guys I know did this with Deluxe reverb RI (put Mercury Magnets OT) and they said the difference is huge. I have tried original 66' Twin reverb and Twin Reverb RI and they are not compareable.

The tf's in your re-issue are made in mexico and are of "OK" quality, I Have heard that the MM trannies are great, but I also believe in the law of diminishing returns, is the small change in tone worth the large expense and amount of work involved in changing it? Will the Holes line up? I find that transformers tend to "Mellow" the more you play the amp. IMHO you should play the amp for a while as-is and see what you think before you go changing out perfectly good tf's.

Thanks for the insight! I get on kicks, ya' know, with buying new things, searching for the elusive tone! With all the money I have been spending on dental work lately I think I will stick with the re-issue OT! Thanks Funkaliciousgroove!
