groove tubes stpg guitar preamp
« on: April 13, 2012, 02:32:44 pm »
anybody got a stpg? got a schematic from gt? havin big issues with mine. i have a very rough hand drawn version i don't trust i found online but thats it.
mines a 6v6 made i think in 1987 . it has never sounded good. no clean sound at all and massive overdrive and distortion ( really ugly) at preamp levels of only 2 with gain off. it was modded to allow for another preamp to be inserted post gt preamp just b4 the pi and a switch installed to shut off the stock pre section.  i was using a jmp-1 in there running it thru the amp stage and out the emulator or line out. that worked ok except for the hum and noise from the jmp-1( prolly could use a voodoo mod but i cant afford it. the amp stage in the stpg works fine giving me cleans when an outboard pre is used ( pi and power tubes) its the preamp stage that sucks. now that fender has bought gt there isnt any reference i can find anywhere not even in aspens tube book (spent good money on that too- decent book just didnt have the schematics i was looking for. if i can get the correct schematics i can maybe find out how to get this beast to have the deluxe cleans its supposed to get with its onboard preamp and have a great recording and low level amp to play with.
btw.. tubes are all 70-80% good. old stock usa rca etc. caps etc are showing no zits or bubbles and test good.

the stpg does sound decent with a 2 12" speaker cab at 8ohm so as an amp its pretty good but could use a little more high end range maybe a little less mid and the bass could come on more gradual. sound thru emulator is the ugly distorted tones
