V8 hyabusa engine
« on: July 17, 2009, 08:21:21 am »

I figured there are enough gear heads here to really appreciate the machine work and what a bitchin engine this thing is. Its basically 2 suzuki 1300 hyuba cylinder heads and cylinders mated to a custom made bottom end. One head is reversed and a 180 degree crank is ground. Several displacements at 2.6 and 2.8 make horsepower of 325 hp and over 400 respectively. These figures are with stock suzuki cams and such. In the page this links to there is a reference to a turbo expert talking 1000 hp being real possible. Normally aspirated 500 would be real easy I suspect. (slide one of these in the back of a beetle bug hehehe) These figures are at something like 9500 to 10500 rpm's redline. You'll see it was placed in a caterham 7 sports car which is essentially a lotus super 6 copy. Motors are available for like 30k which is a lot, but considering its all custom built that seems like a very fair price. Check it out:

AWESOME!

(slide one of these in the back of a beetle bug hehehe)

I've seen it done.....but the best mod for old Air Cooled VW (other than Porsche Engines) is the Mazda Wankel Rotary. That thing is intense....17000rpm in a hurry!
There was a Motorcycle briefly produced by Suzuki with a wankel. A guy I ride with sometimes has one, it'll fly right from underneath you, it wraps up too fast...the engine is only like a 500cc but you can't rate it like a piston engine.

Yeah I've seen the wankel suzuki in person, pretty cool but a hard sell to most buyers of the time. Too expensive and heavy (for a 500 anyway) for the time. Like the water buffalo (750 triple) they did, it has a cult following and despite it being more reliable than the Kawi triples of the day it too was to heavy and complex than the competitors (although it had a better powerband and didn't burn its middle cylinder as easily as the Kawi). Kawasaki had a few real heavyweights that were cool to like the six cylinder water cooled bike to compete with the Honda six, but it weighed a ton and was pretty darn wide. The honda was a great six cylinder bike until it heated up then it was no better than the average 750 4 cylinder bike of the day.
One of my favorite Suzuki's was the titan 500 twin and the gs750e ('82) that I had, it was a large conventional 4 cylinder that had a great powerband kick at about 6 grand and was a very comfortable ride. In I think 83 they went to the smaller road race inspired redesign that was pretty cool but not my cup of tea with its hunched over riding position.

Dyna

> V8 hyabusa

That's a mighty flat torque "curve" for a killer-bike engine. Maybe I seen too many 150cc 2-strokes with a 7,000-9,000RPM torque-band and zero below 5,000.

OK. Can I get it with PS and A/C belts and a 2bbl Holley? At a price that makes sense in a 2002 4-door Accord?

The Accord Four is fun, but I really do like V-8s. Big, mellow, not some 400HP cannonball.

That would be a seriously sweet fit in my gal's 1991 Miata. Perhaps smaller than the 323 Four they put in it. Less shift-knob vibration too. Hell, with that tourqu curve, you hardly need the shifter: 3rd to get rolling in a hurry, 5th to hold your speed without screaming.

I do believe the Norton had and has a wankel . Saw a lot of police service, new one looks impressive ...don't touch that exhaust

Cool, didn't even know Norton was still in production. Those Triumphs are cool!  I've been a fan of British bikes...but I spend most of my 2wheel time mucking around with Italian scooters (Vespa and Lambretta) I love blue smoke from 2T engines... I am always keeping my eyes open for an old Royal-Enfield.  Those things looked pre-war throughout their production.. I often ride with a guy who daily rides a 1961 Triumph Thunderbird that he maintains like a top aircraft. What a beautiful machine!

Now I'm thinking I gotta try a Hyabusa Vespa scooter project   Hell, 200cc 2 stroke motors can get uncomfortably fast for 10" wheels.
