Weber 8" for a BF Champ??
« on: October 13, 2010, 04:42:08 pm »
I need to replace a speaker in a Champ I am repairing.  I'd like to use a Weber 8" but I have no clue which one to get.  I'm figuring the Alnico is a good place to start.  I like the Any suggestions?

Thanks!

I love the 8A100 (early breakup, warm) and 8A125 (late breakup, brighter) but their motor is huge and doesn't fit most Champ cabinets. The budget Sig 8 and 8S offer broadly similar characteristics, fit easily but don't sound as good IMO.

Which Champ? Tweed or BF......I think from the maybe 8 or more 8 inch Webers I bought the best sounding one was the CVC model. It was the ceramic Chicago Vintage Series.

I put a Sig 8 alnico in a tweed Champ clone for a harp player. It sure sounded great for that.

Blackface.

Interesting and this is why I'm asking. Everybody has a different choice. I can spend up to $100.00, does that make things easier?

My best choice is an original 4 ohm C8R and the CVC is the as close as a speaker can get and I have had them ALL. Except for one of those Hemp cone jobs.

I have a stack of 8" speakers, Alnico Heppners, C8R's in different cones and colors both 4 and 8 ohms. Many Webers a few which I use, have or sold. I was building champ amps of various sizes and actually still have a 2x8 cab and 2 4x8 cabs with C8Rs in them and a closed back 4x8 and 2x8 heppner alnico cabs.

Thanks!

I PUT A JENSEN C8 R IN MY 5F 7 AND I AM VERY HAPPY WITH IT. I  HAVE SEVERAL WEBERS ,  VINTAGE JENSENS AND SOME OTHERS.  I THINK THE JENSENS GET A BAD RAP FOR WHAT EVER REASON. YET I LIKE THEM. JUST MY 2 CENTS

Follow up... Got the Weber Sig 8S. Did some maintenance on the amp and a bit of restoration.  The amp sounds great with this speaker. Loud too. Thanks for the help!

LC thanks for follow up.

Was that Sig 8S ceramic or alnico?

Seems like those "Signature" series Webers are a pretty good value.

Cheers,

Chip
