More loose power amp ?
« on: October 04, 2010, 02:35:28 pm »
I posted the same questions at ampgarage also.

I have a 50W 124 (built in dlator) style build that has evolved many versions to date (actually my test bench build). Latest is I built Tubenits and Geezers Tweed Overdrive Specials pre amp into it. At lower volumes it is really good sounding amp, at band level it is way too tight for my playing style. Side by side with the previous builds (nonHRMskyline and 2555) it is too tight sounding.

How could I achieve more loosen power amp section? I tried Delta Pro 12A but prefer RWB on this amp. I'm afraid the PT does not handle tube rectifier. The build has 5 novals and two octals. Overall voltage drop ?

Any tips ?

Thanks,
mat

Try a sag resistor between the rectifier and the first filter cap.You could even switch it in and out.I did that on a JCM 800 and it was cool.I used a 220 ohm 10 watt resistor. It 'browns out' the response. You could also alter the dropping string to lower the preamp voltages. That would give a looser response and less headroom.
Then you could lower the filter cap values a bit to make it feel looser.
Also bias the amp hotter, use 6V6 tubes,a few other things.

Thanks phsyconoodler for the quick answer ! Ok, I'll try the sag resistor in series with the choke. I have the 'precision' power supply as in http://ampgarage.com/forum/download.php?id=1179 ,might be one reason it to be so tight. I have to study if I can put in the 6V6's. The amp is wired so it can also use EL34's. Don't remember how it was with 6V6/EL34's ? The plate voltages on powertubes are about 470-480V. JJ6V6's can handle that kind of voltages IIRR.

I'll report back as soon as I have time to make the adjustments.

Thanks,
mat

The 'early power supply' looks better to me for what you need also. That is one stiff filtering section!
Using the choke makes it stiffer yet.Remove the choke and use the resistor and it will get looser too.
