Buffalo Horn Picks...Good substitutes anyone??
« on: November 27, 2010, 04:49:23 pm »
I bought a Buffalo horn pick for 5 bucks.  I really like it as it has a nice organic sound and sounds like my fingers when I use them.  Much to my amazement, the thing wore down likkity-split.  I don't have $5 to drop that often (though I've seen these picks sell for much higher).  Any Ideas??     Thanks!

Still cheaper than fingers.
A schematic, layout, and hi-rez pics are very useful for troubleshooting your amp. Don't wait to be asked. JUST DO IT!

Allparts sells a bunch of odd material picks.  They are all just trying to be tortoise shell picks, of course, but real tortoise is morally impossible.  None of them are quite right, but they can be closer than plastics.  Myself, I kind of prefer good old fashion celluloid, but I'll admit the thickness to stiffness ratio of real tortoise is awfully good.  Actually, now that I think of it, tortoise is the old fashion choice.

I am not sure of how thick your pick is, but if you do gypsy jazz stuff, the whole rage are really thick picks - 4-5mm thick.  I get mine from a guy in Holland.

They will never wear down.  Ever.
