Volume control in a monitor.

I wasn't sure of the right spot for this post so please move if need.

I am looking at building a "hotspot" type PA monitor. Just passive. probably a 5" speaker. What would be the easiest/best way to add a level (volume) control to this. Would a 250k or a 500k pot make a huge difference. Or do I need something different.I did some searching but couldn't find much info on it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You would need an L-pad to do it otherwise the pot will overheat.You can get a cheap L-Pad at rat-shack.Depends on how many watts are driving the speaker.

OK, we are using a 300 watt /min 4 ohm powered 8 channel mixer. One side is the mains the other is the monitors. split the 300 per side
I'm at 150. I would guess it's not really pushing that. We do end up with a 4 ohm load when we have all monitors linked.

I'm not seeing any l-pads at RS. Is there a DIY option, or do you have a best recomendation.

L-Pads are DIY options.They also list Volume controls which have little transformers in them.They work really well.
  An L-Pad is a wirewound adjustable resistor.You need to go about double the wattage to be safe.
You can find L-Pads at many places,I'm sure it may be listed as a 'volume control'.
