EVM12L's
« on: January 15, 2011, 12:34:26 pm »
I have one of these in a Mesa 1 x 12 cab that I bought many years ago.  It's fabulous!  To me it's less coloured than other guitar speakers and I 've got very used to it's sound.

I'd like another but the trouble is that although available again after a long absence they are hugely expensive.

Is there anything cheaper that sounds comparible?

I'm not after the same massive power handling, though I guess that is part of the sound - you can chuck anything at them and they don't break up (once repaired an old 200W 4 x KT88 Sound City PA amp for someone - plugged my guitar into it and then into the EV, turned it up full and hit an open 'A' chord, Townshend style - wow!!).  I'm not after high sensitivity either, in fact low would be good.  Just want something that sounds along the same lines.

Anything out there fit the bill or is this wishful thinking?

JB.

The word on the street is that the Eminence Delta Pro-12A is supposed to be their attempt at recreating the EVM12L.  I don't have any direct experience with them, just passing on what I've read elsewhere.

Interesting!  Quick price check here (UK) shows the Eminence at about a third of the price of the EV.  The Eminence driver is billed as a PA speaker, which I guess fits with the (relatively) low colouration of the EV.

I'll do some more research, thank you!

The EVM12L is one of my favorite speakers. It's also great in the shop because it handles all the amps.
The specs on the Eminence and the EVM do look vvery close.

As you're located in the UK, you should have a look at the Fane AX and Medusa lines. Really nice stuff at decent prices.

Another European alternative can be Beyma. Spanish-made to very high standards, with some models as good or better as their US-equivalents. Their Liberty 8 is the closest I've found to the classic JBL E120. Alas it's price is also in JBL territory...

Just looked at the Fane AX drivers.  Interestingm seems to be their take on the blue Celestion/vox speakers, didn't know they were doing them.  Very nice, but big money - approaching the EV prices.  The medusa is more reasonable.

Beyma is a new one to me I'll have a look.

Celestion is of course plentiful here and not too bad money wise - apart from the vox style or vintage greenbacks.  Weber is becoming available, and Jensen.  They all make lots of nice speakers, just don't do  quite what the EV does!

Maybe I need to broaden my taste a little!

Thanks for the suggestions.
