My old Heath 2-12 combo
« on: January 13, 2011, 01:26:13 pm »
I have an old Heath 2-12 combo amp with tremolo and reverb.I popped in some new filter caps last night and it sounds pretty damn good.
I put in a pair of Celestion Neo Vintage speakers to keep the weight down and they sound great in this amp.
The reverb is relatively good;as good as any Hot Rod Deluxe;and the trem is not too bad either. It gets really loud and it has an interesting breakup. It goes from clean to dirt with just pick attack.
The tone stack is interesting too.It adds the individual frequencies as you turn the bass and treble controls but adds gain as you turn them up.A LOT of gain;so you have to turn the volume down as the treble and bass go up.
It lacks a bit of the sparkle that a good tube amp can give but overall it's better than most new solid state amps by a country mile.
Anyone have any Heath or Heathkit stuff? I got the amp for 40.00 not working and it took me 20 minutes to fix it.Simple old-school circuit board with nice quality components.Spring Reverb tank. Two channels like a Super Reverb or Pro Reverb.
With a bit of tone shaping it would be a killer amp.As it is it's pretty nice.It really takes pedals nicely. It has a nasty(in a nice way) overdrive when cranked.
Me like! I will get a couple of pics later in the week.I was going to take it to the jam tonight but it still has the two wire cord and I can't take the chance that someone may get a shock.(I should mention it's solid state)

That was my first amp, built it back in about 1967.  I got rid of it a long time ago.  But the DIY bug has stayed with me.  If I see one at a good price I'll pick it up.
