Woo hoo frankenstien roared
« on: March 17, 2011, 11:39:41 pm »
Well at least one half anyway been working on kind of a high gain beast two channel.
channel 1 = 2203 with a switchable extra gain stage, channel 2 a modified slo lead channel. channel one was easy I only had to find the ground i missed . I dont know why I always miss one. channel 2 was giving me fits untill I traced it to my third pre amp tube that wasnt working had me baffled for a few, of course after the old lady went to bed I found a bad solder joint on one of the heater wires .
Cant wait for tomorrow to fire her up. Oh did I say kt66 for output tubes on a marshall type power amp section should be interesting.                       :guitar1 :happy1: :happy2: :occasion14:

Thanks Bill

I found a bad solder joint on one of the heater wires .

That happened to me once so afterwards on all new builds I will always check votages before installing tubes. Once all heaters and B+ is checked I install the tubes and put it on a current limiter (light builb in series), plug into the input w/ a DIY signal generator and hook up a speaker motor. The speaker motor is simply the magnet, coil, & spider innerds I save from cutting the frame & cone away from any old warped frame or damaged cone speaker. I will still get tone from what's left, enough to test stuff with like this. I will check B+ voltages again and then flip the switch on my current limiter giving full power to the amp. Then it's voltage reading time again for all B+ nodes, and doing a Pdiss calculation to see where I'm at there too. After all this, it's time to start pickin' and grinnin'  :m8

I had checked all voltages and all of them were exactly were I thought they should be but when the tube was in it wouldnt work was very strange so shut her of drained caps and started wiggling felt like a dork having a bad solder in such a basic area. Thanks Bill

Real PURDY!

Curious, what's your take on those Mag Comp trannies, The Marshall-esque ones like you have.

I build mostly Fender based amps and love their (Mag Comp) sound and reliably, but those are Black and yours are Silver

I like em high quality good price, first time I have used a kt66 tube, man I like the sound of these.
I got some miner oscillation to figure out its only noticable with the sound turned off the guitar on the slo lead channel I will pin it down just got to do the work. but when the volume is on this thing is smokin.
