TOS " FATT PLUS"
« on: April 03, 2012, 04:34:39 am »
Hi guy's, I listen alot to joe bonamassa and can't get past the sound that he has. These clips is the sound i'd like to produce (and his technique and speed .........)anyway in particular in Happier Times @ 2.18 and The Great Flood @ 2.40 i like the tone and the way the note hangs on and then breaks up in a soulful way  :sad2:.
The Slow Drive 84 was my attempt to achieve this by starting with an amp that has tone to boot in Tubenits SoLow watt amp and adding an FX pedal in front, the thought was there but not the knowledge, again not happy  :sad2:
I built the Marshall silver Jubilee that has a clipping circuit in it thinking that was where it is at, but its too distorted and doesn't breakup nicely. The marshall is a big part of joe's rig along with alot of other gizmos and one being the copper top fuzzface. So is this where he gets his MOJO  :dontknow:
All this got me thinking AGAIN  :think1: The original TOS had an added FATTNESS by dialling in an extra triode via a pot this was great and added some real depth and the jubilee's clipping circuit added the breakup (all be it too much but i'm sure the combo of leds and diodes could tame this) although the FUZZFACE is more transistors than diodes which gives it its beautiful breakup.
When on the net i found a tube 6AL5/BE91 diode that has been used to replace silicon diodes in clipping circuits ( although no schems found on how these are intergrated ) hoping that the diode tube might bit more smoother on the breakup

Rather than the triode just adding depth when dialled in ( this is a good feature)could some of these other addons give me a similar sound, OVERDRIVE but not to distortion and FUZZ but not to funky.

I liked the "FATNESS" feature of the original TOS and even Tubenit has found that replacing the 5879 with a paralleled triodes sounded great in the SoLow Watt, i think that having a extra triode to play with it could evolve into something more, i just don't have the smarts to nut it out.  :dontknow: Thanks

I'm a fan of Joe's also & have kept his tone in mind when tweaking my amps.  PLEASE keep in mind that Joe uses a bunch of foot pedals with his amps and performances.  There is a thread where he demonstrates his pedals and the tone that each brings to his sound here:

I am very interested in hearing what you come up with in this FAT plus approach and hope you pursue it & report back. I like it that you are willing to try innovative approaches and think that's very cool to do so.

Obviously, I can NOT capture Joe's tone but I feel like my TOS is getting some very smooth sustain and a very transparent overdrive at this point.  And at least the smooth sustain and transparency of the overdrive is similar (at some levels) to what Joe is getting.  I did NOT use any foot pedals in this clip to get overdrive at all.

Remember that are ALOT of factors in Joe's tone including his ability, guitar, speaker choices, amps, pedals, mixing board ..........etc..........

We're just not gonna be able to duplicate it, so I'm happy just getting some of the dynamics of his tone with transparent smooth OD being at the top of my list to attempt.

The next thing I want to try is to build the compressor pedal that Geezer recently built and try that out. My gut feeling is that will give me even more transparent sustain & help with playing faster riffs.

With respect, Tubenit

that silver jubilee uses 1N4007 diodes for clipping. try germanium diodes for smoother breakup fuzziness (like the old fuzz face used germanium tranisitors) or leds for less distortion. there's quite a lot of possibilities there.

Hi guy's, There is a lot of stuff in syber space and i have narrowed it down to a few circuits. The Silver Jubilee clipping circuit is basically how i think it could be setup, i like the TOS FATT feature as it is added to the circuit via the pot rather than in the circuit (if you know what i mean) so the clipping circuit is to be added to the triode V2a (as in the Silver Jubilee ) and the signal then exit back into the circuit of plate V1b (if you know what i mean).

I found that the Jubilee clipping circuit is a little harsh for what i want and i been trying to find some other ways of doing the clipping circuit

Again i can only go by the sound clips to how these might sound  :dontknow: they also present another spin on the clipping circuit.
I am interested in whether the tube diodes would work in this case and hoping that PRR might chime in with what he might know  :icon_biggrin:. Thanks

Timbo,

Since you're going that route ............... take a look at a Zendrive OD pedal schematic. Perhaps there would be something useful from that circuit that you could use?

With respect, Tubenit
