 Groove Tube Substitube?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Has anybody tried GT Substitube? I have a very loud Super amp with 2 6L6s, and from what GT is saying, you can convert this amp to a class A EL84s by exchanging the 6L6s with the EL84s Substitubes. Does it work? how would the amp sound.
Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Juda

I bought 2 GT substitubes for 6SC7 - 12AX7. They were fine for a while then one got microphonic and the other fell apart. I'd go with THD Yellow Jackets. I have had a pair of these (6V6 - EL84) for years and they are great. They seem to be unbreakable. Make sure you get the right ones (6L6 - EL84 for you). There is a brand called "Black Jacks" but I don't know who makes them and I've never tried them. I've read they were good....but that may have been someone who was selling them. Maybe somebody here will have tried them.

 Thanks Dave,
Did you have to do any mods to the amp? or just replace the old tubes with the right Substi-tube adapter. And- can you use any brand tubes with GT's Substi-tube?

"Did you have to do any mods to the amp? or just replace the old tubes with the right Substi-tube adapter"

For power tubes, you just put them in. There's a ground wire that you just tighten down under any convenient screw.

"can you use any brand tubes with GT's Substi-tube?"

Yes, any brand as long as it's EL84's (or 6BQ5) for what you're doing. I still say go with Yellow Jackets or at least wait for other opinions before buying. If someone else has had good luck with GT's, well, great, go for it. I've never even gotten a tube I like from them and they're oh, so expensive! They may be better now, though, it's been a few years.

GT sells the adapters with the tubes only, so if I want it I have to take their tubes. Do you know if there is another brand of Substi-tube like adapter out there?

I think you misread his post. He DID recommend another brand.........THD Yellow Jackets. He said he had much better luck with them than the GT's, which i don't doubt having been reamed by GT more than once.
