Plasma answer
« on: December 18, 2012, 07:58:40 am »
I was recently asked a question about the possibility of converting a welding machine into a plasma cutting unit, and I will use this thread to provide any info I can on the subject...

I have not ever, or will not ever attempt to do this myself, but maybe I have acces to schematics and diagrams that might help,,,,let's start with the Theory Of Operation for a fairly simple unit - Miller Spectrum 675:

This Miller Spectrum 375 is a great little 120/230 Vac unit that has served us well in our rental fleet:

And here's some general plasma info from Miller's site:

i used to work for a company that sold you guys 1ph and 3ph bridges and hybrid bridges used in your DC welding and cutting machines in the late 80's - crydom/silicon power corp. i designed some of the M25 and M90 SSR product. always wanted to learn to weld, just don't want to go blind welding.

I don't work for Miller Electric...my co. is auth. repair station....

If you want to learn how to weld, Lincoln Electric just made it really cool, with a 3D interactive Virtual welding booth....
I'll be training to repair these early next year

Just available for MIG and STICK right now,,and the electrode actually burns back to give you the feel of actual welding
