Emminence Delta Pro-12
« on: September 01, 2014, 04:09:35 pm »
OK, I have a Delta Pro-12A in my amp (D'Mars ODS). Keep in mind that this is a Marshallish preamp into a Dumblish OD, FX, LTPI, etc .... that is cathode biased. Probably about a 23 watt amp using 5881's.

This speaker allows me to dial up more mids and the mids are smoother in tone then with the Cannabis Rex that I was using. I think maybe the highs in the Cannabis Rex are slightly smoother?

Main differences that I hear are more sustain and more vowel tone with mids dialed up & the speaker seems to be amazingly touch sensitive especially on the clean setting. Playing softly, it is very clean/clear and when you dig in it hangs on that edge of break up. (this is without changing the dials on the amp).

Whether single coil tone or dual coil tones, the clean channel sounds wonderful to me. I slightly prefer the single coil tones with this speaker when the amp is in the OD mode. This speaker sounds great to me with the OD.

Very cool speaker and seems to be breaking in very quickly.   I like it!   Tubenit

Thanks a lot for this review!.....I've been considering moving away from speakers that color the tone, and this was one of the ones I was considering.
They also came out with a similar 'guitar-based' version of this called the Legend EM-12 ( IMO definitely a nod to the EVM12-L)

My question is,,, do you think that hearing your amps through this speaker might change the way you tweak the amp?...because the speaker is more revealing (in theory)?

One other note...your wording of how sensitive the speaker 'feels' to you made a light bulb light over my head...
I had never really considered that the sensitivity would translate into how the speaker feels,,,but it's pretty obvious from your description of it's amazing 'touch sensitivity'......makes me think more about what was happening in that Carlton video, where he was able to coax those harmonics out at a very low volume.

Thanks again for making me think and taking the time to share your findings.

Absolutely, it definitely did that for me! After playing an hour or so, I went right in and made small adjustments to the amp around the tone stack mostly and then an added boost on just the OD channel.

I have to agree for sure with the comment about affecting how you "tune" the amp in. What I do before any major tweaking is to play several very different guitars like T was describing w/ single or dual coils, woods, etc. Then I'll do the same sort of "test playing" using several types of speaker and cabs that I have. Using this available info to then adjust for something that you feel could be of benefit in most if not all cases. That's when I know that I have reached my goal squeezing out the most that I can from something or getting a response in lows and highs (or gain, vol, etc. characteristic) say through the entire sweep of the pot.
To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism. To steal from many is research.

I built a large ported 1x12 specially designed for the Delta Pro by Randy of Phaez Amps.

I wish I had a better pic, but this will give you the idea of the size:

I agree with how open, balanced yet powerful this speaker sounds, with great midrange (2 kHz - 4 kHz or so) punch. It sounds best for me with my Ampeg R12R amp (2x6L6), which is a super nice clean amp that takes pedals well.

I've played it for lots of guys who swore it was a 1x15 or 4x10 cab - one even guessed it was a Dual Showman cab (!), but nobody has even come close to guessing what speaker is in there

What's funny is that every time I use it for a few weeks, I go back to my 1x12 AX84 Core Cabinet with an Eminence Swamp Thang.

I guess I can only take being clean and punchy for so long, then I have to get a little dirty  :icon_biggrin:

That's a nice cabinet!  I like the ports.  Good review of the tone also.

With respect, Tubenit
