meter fuse
« on: March 09, 2015, 10:29:58 pm »
So, I've had the Radio Shack digital meter for a long time, and it always worked good.  Comparing it's accuracy with other digital meters has shown it to be very good for a low-priced meter.

Then, one day the ohms scales wouldn't work.  I figured it was at the end of its useful life ! :think1:   I actually held it over the trash can to toss it, but decided to check it out.
 Replaced the batteries....still no workie....
Then I checked the two mini tubular fuses near the batteries.....one was open !!
So with that one jumped, the meter worked.  So then, where in hell do I get fuses like that ?  Internet search showed a bunch  of places, and I picked Allied.  Ordered a couple fuses.  Then noticed that they handled AMP brand wire lugs & crimper tools ( luggers)  So I bought some "butt connects", to make the shipping worth while.  Amp stuff is approved for aircraft wiring, so ......I have to use it...
Now waiting for the parts.....
I'll never figure this out......

We need pictures!   :icon_biggrin:
A schematic, layout, and hi-rez pics are very useful for troubleshooting your amp. Don't wait to be asked. JUST DO IT!

Many Fluke meters use "fusible resistors", there's generally one right on the input. They look pretty much just like an ordinary resistor. I have a model 12 as an extra over and above my trusty model 77. I don't really like it, but it works and I bot it cheap, for $25. Anyway, the fusible resistor went out, opened up. I replaced it with an ordinary resistor of the same value as the FR and the meter starting working again. I guess I may blow it up someday.
