5W mini SS amp

someone asked me to design a mini solid state amp for them, wanting a bit more than what something like the Little Gem has to offer. Looking for 1-5W, tone control, gain, volume, and powered by a 9V battery or power supply. Obviously I feel like I'm not going to be able to really get more that 5W out of this, but I'm looking to do a bit more than the typical one stage op-amp circuit. Anyone have some links  to interesting designs they've seen for inspiration?

1+ Watts is unrealistic for a standard 9V battery. Even 200mW (0.2W) pocket radios ran down their batts fairly quick.

The classic battery amp was the PigNose. It took a big stack (8? 10?) of AA cells. It was a gas, but a drag to re-fill.

People who busk are leaning to motocycle and power-tool batteries.
