Shack 15" find
« on: December 21, 2017, 04:52:02 pm »
Due to Ritchie's Radio Shack thread earlier and researching a bit of their speakers I came across this 15" beauty for 49.99 you're out of your mind! And wah-la it's a Utah made in the good ol' USA too! Can't wait to build a new cab for it and hear what she sounds like?

It gives me an idea to follow it up with tolex using Black with orange trim as a color theme?

Nice score.  I will give you $80 for it and pay shipping.

NO!, Are you sure?  Hell yes, I am not selling my NOS Alnico for $80.

Well, how about $85 plus I buy a linear boost.

You are going to get a Linear boost anyway, but we may bury you with it by the time I build it.

You got that right, Jojo.  Sho got that right!

I knew you would love seeing this. HA!!! And I love the private conversation  :l2:

Your memory is just too good Ed!!! My feet are being held to the fire on several fronts currently. But yesterday got a new cabinet maker grade table saw to replace my old one, along with a nice Delta scroll, etc...getting parts and shop a little upgraded and re-organized. I have a few ProBoost enclosures made and will be making more soon...I promise. But you want that special one that sustains rather than performs like the current one? So I have to go back and re-create that "happy accident" it again (it's giving me a mental block and mental paralysis)  :dontknow: :help: :think1:

!!!This calls for a clear plexi glass cab!!!

Congrats on the table saw!  I seem to be stuck with a 8" Craftsman table saw I got 20 years ago at a yard sale for $40.  It actually works well enough so it's hard to justify replacing it.  I lust for a full size, quality model with a router table insert.

A table saw with a router table insert?! Never seen one like that? I do have a separate router table though? My old Delta had direct drive which is a motor turned on it's side and the blade mounted directly to it's shaft. Now, that one might've made a good router table? I gave it to one of my contract Supervisors that already told me his wife was telling him to get at fixing some things around their house! Haha... I don't know if I did him a favor or just made more work for the poor guy?

Here's some images of table saws with router inserts:  https://www.google.com/search?q=ridgid+table+saw+router+insert&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiSovPyh6nYAhXPkeAKHYtlAKcQ_AUICygC&biw=1680&bih=919

The same fence can be used for the saw & the router.  Usually the router goes on the right-side table saw extension.  It can go on the left side of the saw, but there's less room there.  The benefit to left side is that you stand and feed the router on the same side as for the saw.  Some guys put router inserts on both sides!

Anyway, great speaker!

Thanks for the link.  This one has been reconed and states it has been done so as a Guitar Speaker which I do not really know what that means.  Surely I know the difference!

I saw that too Ed. I’m sure my original is a “geetar” speaker although I haven’t been able to fire it up yet as I don’t have a 15” cab yet.  :w2: :dontknow:  This will be rectified soon enough. I hate to admit this but I can’t remember ever playing through a 15 before, and mainly why I bought it in the first place.

That guy rebuilds/re-cones a lot of speakers and uses the same cone on others. In seeing it with all the ribs, I’m generally not a fan of those. They tend to be darker and bassier - if they follow along similar sound pattern of the Weber Silverbells?

It is an instrument speaker as I have the Radio Shack ad for this.  This was the stock speaker in the Showman Cabs, but they are full range which falls into the instrument range as it is a 15".  Like the JBL 140, it is a full range but you still will not hear any clarity from a high hat or the breath if a vocalist.

Actually, they are a very nice speaker to use in a Vintage HiFi.

Are you speaking of my original cone speaker or what you think the newly coned one would sound like? I like the breath sounds of a (hotty female) vocalist!

No, not the recone.  You never really know about recone and voice coil until you hear it.

If you dig the female vocal, get you 2 of these and add a couple of nice horns and make you  SE 300B DUAL.  I prefer an active crossover, but I recently reworked a passive that is really great and much less expensive.  For some reason the 300B tube sounds extremely good for vocals.

You know me, I love the alnico speakers. I listen to music and it is soft and warm, then watch TV and it is a Marantz 7900  11.2 system with Paradigm speakers.  Completely different world and while I appreciate the digital effects like rain falling from the sky (Dolby Atmos) the efficiency of the speakers is much lower which makes it very punchy sometimes so much so that it can be unnerving.

These speakers are not going to be easy to come by in a few years is my thinking.  I hope you do find a good use for it.

If I don't find it to my liking you'll be the first to have it. It may even come shipped with a ProBoost+ inside?!  :w2: :icon_biggrin:
