Cap can horizontal mounts?
« on: March 14, 2018, 10:18:18 pm »
Anybody know where I can find a mounting clamp or strap for a 40x20x20x20/500v JJ cap can I want to fit inside my chasis? I’m trying to avoid drilling a large hole in the chasis for a the vertical mount set up.  Hoffman says the cap can measures 40.2mm wide x 51.4mm long. I’ve done some searching online but all I can seem to find are vertical mounts. Any leads would be very appreciated. Thanks.

Use the clamp that Hoffman sells for that can.
A schematic, layout, and hi-rez pics are very useful for troubleshooting your amp. Don't wait to be asked. JUST DO IT!

I have it but it looks like it’s designed for vertical mounting, no?

Mount it to the side of the inside of the chassis. It works.

Does the cap really have to be mounted in a horizontal position? Or are you just wanting to avoid drilling a big through hole? If the latter just drill two screw holes and mount the bracket. Then put the "top" end of the cap in the clamp. Here's a pic showing that same cap can mounted to the side of the chassis...

Unfortunately it’s a Blues jr chasis and the chasis sides are open so I can’t mount the ring there. I wish I could. Looking into zip tying it down with a couple ground lugs and some silicone.

If there's room you can bend a small sheet of aluminum into an L-shape; bolt the L to the chassis to create an upright "wall", and duplicate sluckey's suggestion with that.

Or, cut one or two bands of aluminum strips to form "belts" around the cap. Such belts would resemble an Ω symbol wrapped around the cap.  A horizontal bolt at the bottom of the Ω could clamp the cap, with the feet to bolted to the chassis.  (Doesn't have to be aluminum.)

Drill two 1/4" holes spaced 1" apart in the area where you want the cap can. Push a zip tie  thru one hole from the inside of the chassis, and loop back thru the other hole. Place the cap can between the ends of the zip tie and zip it down tight to the chassis.

Thanks Sluckey, I’m thinking that’ll be the way to go.

P-clamps come in many sizes and strengths, from TV cable to motorcycle mufflers. You can get perforated strapping in the home-store, flimsy plumbing and heavy garage-door braces. Cut a piece of yoga-mat for firm grip and avoid steel-aluminum contact and corrosion.
