Size of OT

Can’t find too much info on wattage of an OT.  If an OT’s wattage is say 20 watts higher then the tubes it serves, how does that affect the tone? Under wattage we get over saturation, what about vice versus?     


In a 6V6 Plexi, we use about an 18/20 watt OT, if one wants to use 6L6s and uses say a 40 watt OT then goes back to 6V6s would that oversized OT have a difference in tone from the normal 20 watt OT?

As you say, with more current  handling there will be less or no saturation, and better voltgae regulation (less or no sag).


That aside, different OT's, like different PU's, sound different due to different winding techniques,  etc.

after lots of experiments I've "refined" tone to simply a concept of the whole system.  want clean spanky sparkly, oversize the OT, use UL, spend the money on great speaker, spend the time swapping caps n such.  want dirty grundgy dark, build anything then refine down

Thanks, kind of what I thought. Probably too sterile and clean of a tone to use anything bigger than 25 watts with 6V6s in a plexi, then it’s not a true plexi.


I’m kind of getting the versatility thing out of my mind when I do these five AO43s to plexi conversions. Doesn’t make sense to have switches to change tube voltages, OT’s, etc. fixed, cathode bias, either. Finally getting the switch this, that out of my thoughts. Maybe I should build one to handle 6L6s and stick with 6v6s for the others. The more you learn in the beginning, the more add on’s you try but once you tried it all, seems like we go back to what the amp was originally made for...?


I had a 5E3, once that I had voltage switches, rectification and tube changes, etc. in the end I was always using 6v6s so I changed all that “crap” and back to what a 5E3 should be.


Finally getting the switch thing out of my mind, sure makes things much easier to built too,

I like "thinking" the amp is but one piece in an overall music production system, equal parts player, guitar, speaker, pedals, etal.  the AMP is the "spices" added to a food dish  giving it that "dude" flavor.  Making it EXACTLY like Julia did will just drive you to dark and scary places
