adding a "higher" gain stage to a fender deluxe........
« on: December 12, 2018, 07:22:24 am »
I want to build a fender deluxe single channel AB763 using Mr. Doug's tube driven tremolo layout. I am also planning on adding a tube FX loop to the amplifier. I want to add a foot switchable "higher" gain stage to the amplifier using the relay system sold here in the shop. I only want to add more saturation NOT a dedicated 2nd channel and EQ. I am planning to put this adventure into a Fender Princeton size combo and chassis with a 1X12. so using (7) 12AX7's (2) 6V6 and (1) GZ34. I am planning on increasing the filtering with an additional 22uF or 33uF for the added 12AX7, and to drop the voltage for those stages to about 190vDC. I am NOT looking to get into Soldano or Boogie levels of gain, I am thinking nice warm, round saturation to make this a pedal platform amplifier, so all my pedals can color BOTH versions of the amp.

SO I have been reading the trainwreck pages about the "generic" gain stage BUT I do not think the recommended spot for a "fender" amp is really correct since i want to change the style of the amp with this gain stage. WHERE would you guys recommend putting this stage I am thinking AFTER the EQ but before the FX loop. AND how would I want to "silence" the gain stage? I am thinking "shunt to ground" with the relay, BUT any other advice is OF COURSE welcome! thanks in advance for any and all information and input!!!

The relay switched mid-boost and PAB (preamp boost) can add more gain and fullness) without adding a dedicated 2nd channel

I have NOT built either one of these designs, but drew the one with reverb up some time back along with a layout.
