Limited tolex options

Hello,

I have been researching for my Princeton build and have found myself quite discouraged by the limited Tolex options out there. However I do realize me searching “tolex” likely is a trade name for an amplifier specific product. Is there another name for tolex to search or other industry supplies outside of amplifiers.

What I really am looking for is a blue tolex similar to the Supro Keeley Blue Rhino. Not exactly. But along those lines. And I have been able to find is wallpaper. And perhaps a thick wallpaper is a solution. Although durability is concerning.

Any suggestions for tolex sources outside the usual?

I've had the same question for recent builds - as best I can tell, the vinyl coverings sold specifically for guitar amps are really limited.   So, the search palette is broadened.

Automotive and marine upholstery materials have the durability we need.   Many colors, patterns and levels of quality available from a huge number of vendors.

I've been using Alcantara on selected builds -- it's very tough, but the branded product is expensive.  Other micro-suedes are more reasonable,  very nice looking, but are less tough,.

Good idea on marine upholstery! I’ll check that out.

I had Alcantara seats on an Audi and it was the anti-christ to keep up nice. It would pill. I had to take a sweater shaver to it and clean it alot.

I've never seen that style and color of tolex anywhere,  but "Dont Stop Believing" its there.


I'l keep my eye peeled for you.     You might want to ask someone like KC Bernard at Amp Cabinets Direct and some of the other cabinet builders if they know of any source for that tolex pattern.


Another idea is to use some fabric, go to some fabric stores and look at their stock and inquire.

I looked at that stuff. It is nice, but not enough pattern deviation in colors or thread appearance.

I have been also looking into synthetic linen print Vinyl and PVC. The issue with cloth like a tweed is protection. I am not a fan of grimy looking tweed unless on an original vintage amp.   

Considering these other textiles too..
