Ibanez UE305 Ground question
« on: July 15, 2023, 10:40:34 am »
Good day, I picked up this 1983 Ibanez UE305 and have a question regarding the ground. As it is I get a ground loop when used with my Traynor tube amp. I lifted the ground with an 2 prong extension cord and the hum went away.

I looked online at photos and found that the UE305 came grounded (3 prong cord) and ungrounded( 2 prong). Would it be safe to add a switch to have the option of removing the ground on the UE305? Why would some units have a grounded cable and some did not? Puzzled. Thanks!!

Top pic is my unit with ground, bottom is an ungrounded unit I found inline.

I would just use a 2-prong to 3-prong adapter to bust the ground rather than a switch. You're likely to get a hum loop with any amp.

I had to disconnect the power cord green wire in my revibe unit to break a ground loop. As for safety, the earth ground from my main amp is carried through the instrument cables all the way to my guitar strings. Hopefully that's the same with your unit. I suggest you measure continuity from your strings to your Traynor chassis to verify.
A schematic, layout, and hi-rez pics are very useful for troubleshooting your amp. Don't wait to be asked. JUST DO IT!

I checked and there is continuity from amp chassis to guitar strings. Good to go, I'll do the 3 to 2 prong adapter thing.

Question still lingers in my head... Why do some units have a ground and some do not? Different markets perhaps?? I've seen many pics of these online and some do and some do not.

Thanks. Rick.
