Mini toggle as impedance selector switch?
« on: August 01, 2023, 05:31:58 am »
Can I use a dpdt on/on/on switch like this one, wired as sp3t, use as an impedance selector switch in my Brownface Deluxe clone?
I need a 4/8/16 Ohms switch, but there is no space for a rotary switch...

That switch is suitable for switching pick-ups or combining channel inputs, but not as Z selector.

I think you probably could use that switch, but it would not be without risk.   I would NOT use this in a production amp, but might do in a prototype or experiment amp of my own.

The amperage rating is similar to switches specifically designed for Z switching.  Contact resistance and the dielectric rating is the same, with much better mechanical lifecycle ratings.  However, the terminals are small and closely spaced, so you'd be using extra care with your connections (eg, solid hook up wire, careful termination and heat shrink).  There may be other factors I'm not taking into account, of course.

A big disadvantage of a toggle switch used for Z switching is that it is too 'easy' to operate the switch inadvertently.

Perhaps you could find space in an unconventional location for a rotary??

A smart person would heed Dummyload's advice . . .

May be one like this (if the price isn't too high) is what you can use
