Can I use these transformers for my new build?
« on: January 13, 2025, 11:30:09 am »
I picked use a peavey triumph 60 1x12 combo pretty cheap a few weeks ago. I've always wanted to try one. Everything worked except it was farty when using the distortion, bad note definition (it had the mod to put the eq in the gain channels). The guy said some of the tubes were original, so i took a chance thinking that might be it, nope.... peavey has the tone stack setup like a mesa mark series right after the 1st input stage (at least that's what I've read). Folks say it's kind of like a adjustable tube screamer as far as the eq goes with the tone stack being that early in the circuit. I messed with the slope resistor, changed it from 100k to 33k to help get rid of the bass. It helped but I still can't get good note definition with the bass past 7-8 o'clock.
so now i think i might gut it and build a marshall jmp or jcm out of it.
I'm curious if I can still use the peavey  transformers? The schematic shows 500v on the plates.
I would do el34s if i do convert it. I don't know if the schematic will give the information needed to know if they'll work or if I would have actually measure the transformers, which I don't know how to do.

Just a fyi, the peramp tube layout is all over the place as far as v1a, v1b  etc.
Any advice would be appreciated...

I'll try to attach the schematic but for some reason I have issue on trying to get attachments to show up on this forum.
Here's a link in case the attachment doesn't work.

I'm not the kind of guy who is able to help you to mod the amp as to have it to play as you like but I think there is someone that can suggest you a mod

Sayed that, about the use of the PT with EL34 tubes instead of 6L6:

remember that a 6L6GC require 0.9A for heaters and EL34 require 1.5A

so, if your project is to use 4 x EL34 Power Tubes you require 6A @ 6.3V and probably your PT is missing 2.4A of current (this without consider the preamp tube consumption)

The more

@ 500V B+ I think the OT of the amp (that uses 4 x 6L6GC) will probably have a primary impedance of around 5K, using 4 x EL34 it will be better (to me) the primary impedance will be a bit less higher

For some reason the power tube section of the schematic only shows the  4 tube120 watt version and not the 2 tube 60 watt version. Not sure if that makes a difference.
I will stick with 6l6 to keep from buying new  tyrannys if I need to.

Two 6L6 tubes so 0.9A x 2 = 1.8A

if so you can feed only 1 EL34 (1.5A) safely

don't you think it will be better to use 6L6 tubes instead of EL34 ? Despite all you have the PT and the OT for those tubes

I will try the amp with know good tubes.

Power tubes ( new or old ) need the right bias. Did you check it ?
