Schematic Check and Layout Development
« on: June 15, 2025, 03:48:11 pm »
Hi Everyone,
I'm putting together a schematic for a 30 watt amp that gives me the preamp of a 6G3 Deluxe and the phase splitter/power amp, and tremolo circuit of a Canadian amp called the Celestion from the Johnson sound system company in Brandon Manitoba, along with one tube 12dw7 Reverb.

Here's the schem from the 6g3 - https://el34world.com/charts/Schematics/Files/Fender/Fender_deluxe_6g3.pdf

The 12dw7 Reverb - https://guitar.com/guides/diy-workshop/build-tube-spring-reverb-unit-amplifier/

I created (with scstill's help and feedback) and attached a combined schematic (drawn in KiCad), along with the hand drawn schematic of the Celestion from a tech that has restored one. I'm hoping to get a custom board made from here for the build. Thank you in advance for any schematic or layout guidance/tips you may have. Let me know if you see any design issues or glaring errors.

I suspect that a 12AU7 stage will not have enough gain to serve as the reverb mixing tube. Have you thought of using the unused portion of V1?
Now is when you could plan for that option by including an extra set of turrets or eyelets on the board to keep that possibility open.

I can definitely use that unused half of the 12ax7 for the mixing stage.  Is there a way to go straight from the schematic for a board layout in DIYLC?dr

Read this; https://www.valvewizard.co.uk/paraphase.html
I think it is your Phase inverter and if so you cannot mismatch those two tubes
If you need more gain then replace the entire 12AU7 with a 12AT7 or 12AX7
Or use the unused half of 12AX7 as a stand alone tube stage to mix (maybe that is what ac427v meant)

Original poster should ignore my advice. I assumed that the pi was a cathodyne without looking at the circuit. Oops :dontknow:
I like the possible alternatives suggested by scstill--if they are even needed.
Sorry about that.

Thanks Ac427v  and scstill. Definitely looks like a paraphrase pi. I'll use a 12AT7 or an 12AX7 in that slot.

my experience is that you can swap 12a_7 tubes after the build to try different options
If you really want to clone the original design with 12au7 PI, then maybe adding an additional mix stage before the 12AU7 PI with that 12ax7 open triode.

No reverb but this Lizzily amp used 12au7 as PI into 5881 and it sounds great.
Old Organ amps used alot of 12au7...
