Joy of cardboard
« on: February 20, 2009, 06:20:18 am »
I started a thread on the other side that mentions the cardboard amp sound.  For those of you who might not be familiar with Woolworth's finest here's a short clip of a Gregory MKV.  50C5.

Yes.  I had just put in new filter caps so I was giving it a test drive.  8" speaker.  I added just a touch of reverb to one channel and maybe a bit of flange.  I can't remember for sure.  Low end Epi LP with Seymour Duncans.  DR Blues elevens.  One (maybe two) Buds.

Ya, they've got their own little bit of mojo.  I enjoy playing them.  You can crank them full up and still play along with the radio.  I have another one, an Alamo Capri.  That one's really quiet full blast.  There's probably something wrong with it, but I'm going to leave it.

Very Cool.   The Chord Progression reminds me of Fine Young Cannibals' "She Drives Me Crazy". Nice sound.
I've got lots of old All American 5 tubes laying around, I should copy one of those amps, every one I've played has  a nice tone. I haven't built one though.

Fine Young Cannibals' "She Drives Me Crazy"

That's what I was going for.  Ya, I'd like to build one someday as well.  You can still find some cheap ones as long as they aren't Kays or Harmonys.  Those have gotten too expensive.  Even Alamos are starting to get up there.  I'm sure hundreds of millions, perhaps billions where produced.  There's probably a chart out there somewhere, likely taken from an old film strip, showing how they would stretch from here to the nearest ex-planet if stood end-to-end.

Ha, sounds like "Hit me with your best shot" Pat Benetar.

Shows how much I know about cannibals
