How to do a minitoggle for Humbucker--Off--Single coil tap ?
« on: August 02, 2009, 01:42:08 pm »
Of course it can be done.  Just give me the directions and I'll do it.  A little simple schematic might be nice.  I havn't found this combination on the net yet.

Thanks!

I thought Seymour Duncan had a schematic, but apparently not.

It's pretty easy, though.  You need an On-Off-On switch.  you wire one pole to turn the pickup on (the output of the pickup goes to the middle lug of that pole, and the two outer lugs get tied together and are your output), and the other pole has ground to the common lug, and the pickups center tap on one of the outside lugs (just one!)

Lemme see...

You want a humbucker that can be used as a single coil?  I think you'll need a PU that gives you two wires out then. one for each coil. One gets hooked up normal, the second runs through the switch before getting hooked up parallel (or is it series, too many options used over the years to keep straight.) IIRC the PU will have a coil tap?

Usually, it will have four wires - one for each end of each coil.  Oh, plus a shield.  You tie the end of one coil (usually the slug coil) to the start of the other (screw) coil.  If you ground that junction (the center tap) you will get the output of only the screw coil.

Lindy Fralin does it with three wires, which is fine most of the time.

Does this help?:  http://www.guitarnuts.com/wiring/sw3.php

Well, it doesn't really have what he is looking for, but the second picture (the splitting diagram) is what he needs on one side of the switch.

Assuming a Seymour Duncan humbucker, the other side should have the black wire from the pickup on the common lug (the one in the middle), and the two outside lugs should both go to volume control.

And don't forget, it's an On/Off/On switch, not an On/On/On!
