Traynor YBA-3
« on: March 20, 2011, 01:44:44 am »
This amp came across my bench this week.  It is making a clicking noise after a few minutes of use.  I've never heard this kind of noise in an amp so it's going to be a fun repair.

I knew eventually I'd see a Traynor or Garnet being that I'm back in Canada these days.  It only took 2 weeks, that's when I agreed to take in some repairs from local music stores...5 days later I have 9 freakin amps :BangHead: :help:

Why do I have a difficult time saying no to peaking inside an amplifier?!!

Anyhow, these amps look really well built, very much fender-like.  It has huge iron... 200W.

I might need help with this one, we'll see.

Yeah they are well built!  Pete Traynor took Leo's road-ready amp concept to a new level.   There are stories out there of how Traynor would show off the toughness of his gear, I don't know how true they are....but I've poked into a handful of vintage Traynor's and have always been impressed with the build quality.

The owner of the amp gave up on it and sold it to me.  Now I've got a good platform for my bass amp that I've always wanted.

I have an empty 4x12 cabinet that I want to use for this head.  I've never bought bass amp speakers...I see Weber has some 12" bass speakers.

Anybody have words of wisdom for bass gtr speakers?

I usually go with Pro-audio type speakers for bass where the response is a little more flat than a guitar speaker.

Eminence has a line of speakers called Bass-Lite  which have neodymium magnets, I haven't tried these but I've used other Eminence Neo-magnet speakers and liked them. It makes a huge difference when moving a cabinet.

I love Aguilar's speakers, which I think are eminence speakers. I have three old Traynor amps, the 70 YGM-3, and the 74 YRM-1 both have the original tubes, I guess that might say something about how they were built.... I like 'em alot.

What would you say the yba-3 is worth these days?  I'm guessing around $800?

I'd buy those speakers at avatar if they were 12", since I already have an empty 4x12 I'm planning to use.

Ive recently looked at some eminance 12,s I was thinking of building some more pa speakers there are some pretty good prices on them it seems the ones used for bass are also the ones I would use for pa.

The average YBA-3 goes for about 450.00.   800.00 is unheard of.I wouldn't buy it that's for sure!

Yeah.  I bought it for $300, fair price IMO.

The tubes look like Mullard's...preamp and power.

This amp will more than likely become a project amp for me.  I need a bass amp and was considering building one from scratch and then this came across my bench.  Good timing.  The transformers on this thing are crazy big.
