I'm Lookin to Buy a Practice PA. Recommendations?
« on: April 20, 2011, 03:13:32 pm »
You guys are a trust worthy bunch.  I need to get into an affordable practice PA.  Looking for recommendations.  Not really interested in bells and whistles.  I'm thinking 400 - 600 watts.  Reliability is important.

Thanks in advance!

-Richard

go hunting for a used yamaha emx 660 or similar. i bridge the output on mine and run into a single hi-power full range speaker box (PV for example) on a stand. you may never need any more PA than this and it's built pretty tough.

Hi Rich: One website I would recommend you edjumicate yourself on would be Bill Fitzmaurice's site. There are a lot of musicians and DJ's that are 'rolling their own' systems. Stay away from "speakers on a stick" systems (total cr*p). A beginning system would be something like a (new) Behringer mixer or all in one mixer-amp to get you in the door, or (better) look around for used mid/highline equipment Rane makes some good stuff... get a DBX driverack processor or Beringer 2496 to EQ with (manditory). Amps- any old Crown, Yammie, Carvin, amp with a couple-three hundred watts is fine. Speakers... clean acoustical (jazz, country, rock) a pair of SLA's and a couple T-24's V-coupled 400 watts for the subs. Heavier stuff: pair of Jack 2-10/2-12's (newer redesign of the O-10) or a pair of DR250's (if you have the chops to do it) Subs for this would be a pair of 24 wide Titan 39's, V-couple. Want to play a larger venue? Add more Jacks. Playing outside? Double the number of subs and V-couple...
