Any thoughts on white Mallory 150's?
« on: June 21, 2011, 07:35:45 am »
Well, I finally used up my supply of .022mf 630v caps and ordered some new ones. It's my first look at the new white Mallorys. The color doesn't bother me but these things are tiny. they're about the size of the 400v yellow caps. Before I touch solder to these things, does anyone have any feedback/thoughts/stories about these things? I'm considering switching to Xicon's, just based on the puny size of these things. They just make me nervous!
Thanks,
Dave

I've been using them for a couple years now. Haven't had any problems. They don't seem to add as much color to the circuit as the old yellow caps.
A schematic, layout, and hi-rez pics are very useful for troubleshooting your amp. Don't wait to be asked. JUST DO IT!

Are the 400v Mallory 150s still yellow?

FWIW I use 400v coupling caps except in special circumstances.

Cheers,

Chip

I haven't had any problems with them. With their small size they may be less prone to pick up noise.

I used them and my amp got 15% better gas milage  :l2:

I didn't like the change either! I like the yellow to match my teeth!

Hmmm, I don't see any size differences between White and Yellow Mallory 630v's

Most of the Mallory 150's in the bins are all white, but there are a couple yellows left in each bin

The whites are the same size
Except the .0022's The white .0022's are actually a big longer, but the same diameter.

Those yellow ones you can list on ebay as "vintage".  :icon_biggrin:

I just got a shipment of stuff including white mallories from Doug -- unbelievably fast shipment; ordered Fri night, arrived Mon morning!! doesn't seem possible -- and the other good news is they're SMALL.  Can't vouch yet for tonal performance, but I need to retro-fit them into a vintage Fisher point-to-point rat's nest of a hi-fi amp and they will certainly fit!

I guess you're right, side by side, they are the same size. I checked and Mouser says Xicon is no longer making their version so I guess I'm stuck. I don't like changes to the things I like; it's never for the better! I don't suppose I'll be able to hear a difference. I'll give them a try.
Thanks,
Dave

Are these Mallory 150's?
This amp was on my bench tonight ( well kitchen table really) in an unhappy state.
Owner said it started making funny noises and blowing smoke  in the middle of show ( don't you just love that) and managed to switch it off fast. The cathode caps cooked on the output tubes, one exploded whilst the other fried. I don't think it's a good idea to silicon the caps  to the bias resistors. This is a Bad Cat Classic Cat (5E3 clone with I vol 1 tone) that he'd paid 2K for used  :l2:
It's a nice little amp, just loud enough to play with a drummer. I was looking for exotic parts but I think I found heyboer trannys, Tandy( Dicksmith in my country) 1watt resistors,Mallory caps (relabeled Matchless or leftover Matchless- bingo the exotic parts) etc. This made me think that the amps I see built on this forum must be worth between 5-10K.

The yellow caps do not look like they are Mallories to me

They should have this on them - 150 -M-

The M has a line through it like the picture below

Matchless- and Badcat-branded caps are made in USA.

CDE has been OEM'ing their film caps from a Taiwanese manufacturer for ages.
