GU50 - Please what is the most rational use of this tube ?
« on: September 17, 2011, 04:23:29 pm »
At the Ham Flea Market in Marzaglia I met a Hungarian radio amateur and bought 10 GU50 tubes

In one other thread we discussed about the datasheet and  possibility of this tube

the EL152 is very close to that tube and the datasheet gives many options, beginning with an SE amp with 18W output till a 2 tube PP amp with 120W output

the tube is known as to have a very linear response, so my question is:

which is, according to your thinking, the most suitable use ?

what kind of scheme would see the best use of it ?

a TOS with a pair of that "tank" tubes is out of question ?

is a tube is best to reserve to bass amps ?

SORRY, a  lot of questions revolving around ...........

Treat them like big KT88s/6650Cs, be easy on the screens, enjoy.

Hi FYL

My question isn't about technical use

my question is: as this tubes are known to be very linear, which is the kind of amp were they can be better used ?

GU50 is a tough USSR copy of a German tube, and really a lot like a heavy-duty 6L6GC.

Use it because it is cheap and rugged.

Heavy-duty, yes, but it's a transmitting tube with very little space between screens and plates. Treat them gently when it comes to screen voltage/current.

seems to be mechanically and electrically a very rugged tube. euro ham guys beat the snot out of those things. search youtube - there are vids of guys using them to drive tesla coils.

where i'd start? 18W class A single tube plan. 2K5 SE load is common. use that, it won't hurt the plan - just won't make 18W.

hammond link below to what you'd likely need for an OT to do the job.

http://www.hammondmfg.com/1627.htm

build a "real" super-champ type amp. or maybe SE, ac15, i have no idea what you like tone wise and no idea what it will sound like other than it's likely to be loud. do what most folks here do, take plan from something already built or piece together parts of others.

you could build the TOS SE w/ GU50.

we can't hold you by the hand... we're too far away + you're not pretty.

peace.

Thanks for your suggestion DummyLoad

what I was asking is which is the better type of schematic (not which schematic) to plagiarize considering that those tubes are very linear ?

I think that a Vox or a Matchless aren't a good idea, I think that tube will be better used for something like an Hiwatt or a bass amp, about this I'm looking for your council

Many Thanks
