A Couple Dumb Questions
« on: November 20, 2011, 01:19:23 am »
Sorry to have to ask these, and I think I know the answers, but I wanted to make sure:

1.  The 01 caps on here are the same as a .01 on a schematic and that these type of caps are generally not preferred in guitar amps?

2.  The squares on this board are resistors and the dots are the color code.  Are these any good?

3.  Will I ever need a 47mf 200vdc cap?  I have 30 of them.

4.  What is this thing?  Looks like some crazy switch to me.  It has 3 actuators on it that move the pins around.

5.  I found some pots in the garage that are 8ohm 15watt.  Are these of any use in an amp?  They came from some big house speakers.

6.  My father in law is throwing away a 67" tv that is about 8 years old.  Are there any parts I should take from it?  I was thinking maybe filter caps and small relays.

Thanks again for putting up with my stupid questions.

Google domino caps. They're caps not resistors.

OK I'll bite, that kind of circuit board presses my button. All looks good.
1. can be good. Ceramic caps have been used to give a "rawness" in some very high end amps.
2. the square dominos are, in my opinion, way better than modern caps. I use them if ever I find them.
3. Yes the value and voltage is not common for our usage. Sometimes I will put one of this kind in parallel with a bias cap. You can only really know by testing for leakage if they are still good.
4. the crazy switch image is not shown, only a repeat of 3
5. L-Pads. Possibly of use in a DIY attenuator circuit. Done that. Not great. Get a Palmer instead.
6. I wouldn't put any money on the 67" being a good donor.

I'll try to answer some of your questions:

1. They are ceramic disk capacitors - you would need to find their voltage rating before using them in most valve amp circuits. They do tend to be frowned upon these days, but Leo Fender ( amongst many other amp builders ) used plenty of them in the good ol' days.

2. As SIX el SIX has noted, they are mica capacitors, and probably quite usable - especially if you are seeking a "vintage" presentation.

3. Those capacitors are 0.47mfd, not 47mfd. If you Google "micamold tropicap" the comments you will find are not encouraging.

4. Wrong picture???

5. No obvious use in a guitar amp. They were probably used to vary the output level of a treble horn in a 2-way or 3-way speaker system.

6. Sorry - I don't know.   :w2:

Edit: I've now seen overtone's post - looks like we agree on most points.  :icon_biggrin:

Looks like it might be some electromechanical part of an old organ. Possibly a part of the tone generation circuit, maybe for the bass pedals, perhaps? Hard to tell from that pic. On my browser, the pic renders only the left-most portion of the assembly, with only the solenoids and seven of the closest soldered rod-ends visible. A pic of the whole assembly would help.

Do you know what it came out of? That may provide more clues for us to work with.

If you're having problems getting high resolution pics to upload/display properly here, you may want to upload them to one of the many free photo-hosting sites like Photobucket and just post a link here. That's what I usually do, as most forum software has limits on photo size/resolution, and also often butchers the pictures when trying to display pictures directly uploaded to the forum.
