Ampeg V4 Tube replacement
« on: March 20, 2012, 09:22:12 am »
Hi All,

I'm getting ready to sell a 70's Ampeg V4.  I only have two of the orignal 7027s in it (I think that's how I got it). I have a quad of Sovtek 6L6WXT+, do you think they can handle the voltages? I see online that people have had success with other 6L6 types.

Thanks,
Dave

My V4 came with 4X Groove Tube 6L6's and it worked fine.  (I since replaced them with 7027A's which improved tone IMHO.  Haven't tried 6550's which many people swear by.)

the amp has 545V on the plates. look at datasheets of different tubes and you will find the maximum plate voltage they can handle. if you take it easy on the bias they can handle a bit more. that's why most 6L6 types survive but some don't. checkt the plate voltage, check the bias, check the datasheet of the tubes.
