I found 2 used scopes for sale:

tektronix 2235 and tektronix 7704...

What you guys think?

a 100Mhz oscope will be fine

a 250Mhz oscope will be fine too but excessive

also a 100MHz oscope is redundant, but if the price and conditions are good, why not ?

I've a Philips PM3217 dual channel 50Mhz and got it because I swapped it for few money with my previous dual channel 20Mhz oscope

PRR use to say that also a 5Mhz oscope will be fine for audio use, so get what you can have in good shape and cheap

I use 19KHz and 450KHz 'scopes.

Too-complicated is bad.

I found them for a fair price, around US$600,00, that's why I'm asking. These are very expensive gear donw here and even 'cheapo' scopes get astonishing high prices...

I asked the dealer if it comes with probes and manual. He mentioned it was calibrated recently - what seems to be a plus..

What I understand from you is that it maybe even be too much for what we do??

Would you go ahead and buy or look for something else?

if you can afford them, the price is what you can live with, then buy them. what i believe PRR was eluding to is that modern scopes have so many whistles and bells that they can be cumbersome to setup for simple test. if you have access to a lower BW/lower cost unit, then that would be a better fit for what we do.

i am of the belief that if you have an inquisitive streak then you'll figure it out.

Yes I did...I think it's really cool!! Do you think it could fulfill our needs?

I have little exp with scopes...have made use of it sometimes...nothing fancy...

I've got an HP 100 MHz dual trace O-Scope that my grandpa used to use that I would sell to you cheaper than that price! I have no use for it as I have two Tek 2235's that meet my needs. I would have to verify it works correctly before I could quote you a price for sure, but if you're interested in it, then send me a PM, and I can get you more info.

I have a Tek 453. It is great for amp work. If you get a good cheap one a recap will be in order. It will give you some good solder experience if don't have much. I love mine. I had an old leader that is relegated to curve tracer duties now. Oh and if you every try to buy a 453 make sure you get the newer ones without the tubes. The tubes are hard to come by.

I have an Eico 460 tube model.....everything works but I'm just a new-dufass so not sure how to do testing with it yet...need to find a probe that works with this model cuz this one came without a probe. not sure where to start with that search. any suggestions?

Is this a good one to have for tube amp signal work?

Just get a length of coax (RG-58 is good). Put some banana plugs on one end. Put a standard meter probe on the center conductor of the other end. And put a gator clip on the braid of the end with the probe. Connect the center conductor/banana plug to the top vertical input. Connect the braid/banana plug to the center vertical input. Put a jumper between the center vertical jack and the ground jack. That's it. Download and read 460.pdf from BAMA...

A better solution to the home made probe... Get a male dual banana plug to BNC female adapter for the vertical input. (Heck, get one for the Horizontal also). Now you can use any ready made probes. Careful, you'll quickly exceed the value of that scope. May want to just stick with home made probes for a while.

thanks SL .... I'll get started today....well, after I get done adding a few simple mods to my Supro S6606....little SE job I like the tone I get a lot. I'm tweeking the tone and have settled on running EL34 in the output.....sounds good and lots of cajones

Never had a probe. Just run alligator clips to the terminals. When you get tired of tangles and pop-offs, use some 2-cond speaker wire with red and black clips one end, under the 'scope terminals at the other end.

A 4MC 'scope is just-barely fast enough to maybe deserve a probe. Doing guitar amps, you really do not need great precision above 1MHz, not really over 100KHz (0.1MHz). And the 600V input limit will cover any preamp or driver circuit (do NOT 'scope the OT primary leads without more thought).
