Uninvited
« on: February 17, 2013, 04:45:01 am »
Sat down a few weeks ago to record some Robin Trower after 'Nit challenged Doug.  I noticed that I had bought the backing track to Alanis Morrisette Uninvited and never did anything with it.  I really like this song with it's haunting melody and frenetic ending.  Not really a showoff guitar lead-type song, but more of a mood set back in the mix.  I wanted to rock it up a bit with a lot more guitar.  So, I stripped out all the  guitars and organ and started over.  I originally tried singing the vocals Ian Gillan/Bruce Dickinson style and it didn't work.  My wife said to sing it like Jon Anderson (Yes)/Bill Henderson(Chilliwack)/Mickey Thomas(Starship) would do it, since I used to do them hundreds of years ago, and make it sound haunting (yeah right...).  So here I am sounding more like Mickey Mouse than Mickey Thomas - but I think it works better with the song.

I tried for the wall of sound with four tracks of guitar and three tracks of vocals.  Signal chain: Strat into Scholz analog chorus into graphic eq into my tube preamp into Major miced up in another room.  It was up pretty loud  - earplug level had I been in the room.  Synth sound at very beginning under the vocals are knuckles on the headstock.  Middle organ-type blast was same with a little feedback.  Everything was dry except the echo on one of the vocal tracks.

'Nit has been bugging me to post something so I finally cleaned this one up and "hear" it is.  Hope you like it, if not it's HIS fault! :icon_biggrin:

Set the mood nicely for a Sunday morning w/ coffee for me. I was thinkin a little Pink Floyd-ish myself. It's about time you did something! Well done sir.

Finally, a great tune that is very well done!  I haven't decided whether you should get extra points for it sounding that good with a strat .....OR take points off for using a strat at all.
 :dontknow:

Definitely get points for the vocals.  Thanks for posting it!  You got lots of talent going on!

How about anything Trower now?

Best regards, Tubenit

Very cool rendition....always liked this song, and didn't think you were young enough to appreciate it  :dontknow:    (C'mon,, I had to take a shot)

I love the mental picture of the Major in the other room peeling the paint off of the wall

You really suceeded with the wall of sound approach, AND you get extra points for busting your own balls about the singing (for the record, 10,000 times better than any singing I am capable of  :embarrassed:)

Thanks for posting it!..........my favorite part is how much you do sound like Blackmore!!

Thanks guys!  Madison, if I did any Yes, it would have to be the Trevor years because I aint EVER gonna sound like Howe!  My band used to do Chilliwack, some Starshi...p..., and Owner of a lonely Heart.  I got to sing these because the guitar parts were easy during the singing parts.  Like I told 'Nit, its that walking and chewing gum thing that I never got...  Used to do all the screaming Ian Gillan stuff too, but I've lost a lot of range.  I used to be able to do a good Jimmy Dewar, so we will see if I can still hack it.  I have to wait till everyone is out of the house before I can blast again.

Come on SG, I'm not THAT old!  Ok, maybe I am.  I listen to everything.  I've told this story before, but a few years ago in about a two month period, I saw: George Strait, the St. Louis Symphony, an Italian opera, a musical, Trower, and Ozzfest.

JoJo, your turn!

And finally, 'Nit....  You have been on the Dark side for so long you think Justin Beeb's is cutting edge. :m8
