Some llve recordings with current retro band
« on: February 20, 2013, 11:24:36 am »
Here are some recordings I made with a band I play with from time to time.  The amp I am using is either a copy of a Fargen ole 800 or a modified super reverb and a 147 leslie.  Fun stuff. and pedals.  Les Paul and Gambale Ibanez and telecaster.

https://soundcloud.com/echambley-1/sets/loose-rooster

Don't make too much fun of these as we all still have day jobs.

BTW, if you want to know what I sing like, listen to I Feel Good and Low.

Well thanks Doug.  They have another lead guitar player who plays with them at bar gigs.  I refuse to play clubs anymore.  Ruins the weekend going home after 4 in the morning.  These were recorded at a Harley Davidson Dealer during a open house party at Smokey Mountain H-D near Maryville TN.

Simple live recording with direct outs from the console to a Pro Tools interface so I could back the bass down and make the vocals on top.  Other than balancing the tracks, I did not no editing, just bounced them.

I was using a Marshall 50/50 with a Rocktron Voodoo Valve processor.

No wah, I do that with my hands.  Thanks!

I normally wouldn't use this setup, but it allows for a ton of versatility and I played with a Country Act the same day.  Weird, I was playing Van Halen, Merle Haggard and T-Bone Walker the same day.

On that tune I was using a Gambale S model Ibanez which I no longer own. H-S-H, 5 position with coil tap.  Really a cool guitar, but I sold it.

How did I miss this!!!!

Great stuff brotha!  Anyone who has played out live knows all the crap that can happen....  And how you are at the whim of the board guy.  We dont have it here on this site, but I just cringe when some kid (or 20something) living in his parent's basement comments on live music people post on U-toob or wherever about how they suck.  I'm like, really dude?  The only living thing you have ever played to is your cat or your girlfriend that thinks you are cool when you burp - and that qualifies you to criticize someone who is actually out there working his or her butt off?  Sorry, a little off topic!  No fun to be made of from me!

Man, that was great stuff!  Nice pipes too by the way!  Lots of diverse tones you are getting - all at one performance  WITHOUT a stupid POD going direct......  Hmmm, I would have thought you were playing a.......STRAT!

Thank you Jim.  I always have a guitar that I setup to sound like a strat.  The Ibanez Gamble (I have sold) was a S-S-H.  All were split rails but the bridge with coil taps on every position. and the guitar would quack nicely.  Also on the neck it was very nice  My problem with strats is I have never found one that is affordable that I like.  I have my eyes on a new select from fender.   I am planning to play it again this afternoon.  It takes me a Looooooooooooog time to decide on guitars.

I was looking at a 70 Fathead in cream, but it has texas specials and by the time I bought it, set it up like I want it would have been pushing $3000.  Fender guitars were made with idea of being less expensive.  This is not.

Too many options and I cannot decide if I want maple fretboard or Rosewood.  I also really prefer a flatter thinner neck for solo.  I think I need to just get another Ibanez for ripping and a strat because everyone uses one from time to time.  I saw a Prestige on Craigslist 10 of 10 for the asking of $400.  That is a lot of guitar 4 $400.  Mahogany back Quilted maple top, Medium Jumbos (my favorite).

How true it is about your comments on playing live.  I come from the old school where you actually had to learn the song, not just make a couple of loops.  I do go listen to all of the new bands that come through town.  Every band should have a couple of cover songs they have made their own.  It is the only way you can tell if they are any good.

This band I was playing with, the members have been playing together off and on since the late 70's.  The drummer is a Harley Division rep and get pretty cool gigs at the Motorcycle events.  Bike riders seem to like the same music I like.  We always make a set list and never follow it.  We also do a Karaoke set and get the audience, as many as can fit, on the stage.  Just a gimmick we learned to get a larger following.  We don't worry about the following any more unless they will carry my rig.

We have been working on building a new studio and it is about complete.  When we get it done, I plan to make recordings of all my builds I have not sold including the KT88 build.  Jim, I hate to say it but these tubes have such a wide, round tone.  I am still tweaking it a little as I need to get it to feedback just a smidgen more. Jojokeo gave me an idea of how to add a gain knob in addition to the larmar master.  It is very cool and I am using a 5k pot and I think it is a little too much.  I am not sure if I will reduce the Pot.  Works fine with a 2k across the pot, but I think I will reduce the resistor on the tube and keep the full 5k pot.

I remember trying to get a copy of a song I wanted to do by leaving a cassette recording a radio station for as long as I could
I also remember dubbing the songs off of the original cassette/record to a "practice" cassette, because I would ruin the tape by rewinding the lead parts over and over,,,,picking riffs off one by one,, for countless hours
Not to mention breaking a couple 8 track players!!

play, pause, rewind 10 million times
Wayyy too inconvenient for this next generation......would take away from their "Guitar Hero" time

ED, have you ever played a neck with no finish?........both rosewood and ebony(and others,,, Goncalo Alves and Bubinga are interesting) have tight enough grain structure so you dont have to have any clear on them....
I got hooked on this a couple years ago when a played a PRS (Modern Eagle Quatro, I think it was) with a solid rosewood neck.......amazing feel
If you've never tried it,,,it's worth a feel......since then I sanded the clear off of my $10 yard sale acoustic
One of these years I'm going to get around to doing a Warmoth strat with one of these,,,,,Callaham,,etc.

Flatter, thinner neck?---check out the Wizard profile on Warmoth's site

Never no finish, but I have put a french polish on all my bolt on neck guitars.  Feels just like wet sanded bare wood.  I prefer it for rippin it up.  I am actually a big fan of the Wizard II Ibanez and the new 5 piece Wizard III.  When Ibanez had their custom shop here in you home state, I ordered a few.

I have a lot of strange quirks, just like most others here.  For some reason I simply think Set Necks should have a finish, however I would love to have a Tough Dog Telecaster from the fender custom shop.  It is a set neck with almost no heel.  Looks strange on the back, sort of like a Carvin model I have played.  Finish everywhere except on the back the unfinished neck and continues in a large stripe to the end of the body.

See it here.  http://www.musiciansfriend.com/guitars/fender-custom-shop-artist-series-merle-haggard-signature-telecaster-electric-guitar

I know what you mean exactly.  Now, go to you local Bowling Alley Pro Shop and get some stuff called easy slide.  Put it on your left hand and it will make a finished neck feel the same.  Not greasy and will not stain or hurt the wood.

I can say I like the Zach Wilde LP.  It has a light satin finish.  Feels bare.

There are some who believe a set neck will sustain longer, but this comment alone is not true.  Larry Carlton seems to be able to play a finished neck on his 335 as limiting as the finish may be. :l2:
Once my playing exceeded his, I felt I could manage a finished neck as well.

Really the fastest neck I have ever played is the Wizard II.  I have built one, but they are never worth what the parts cost not to mention the labor.  At one time I had too many guitars.  Now I have narrowed to my old LP, a Heritage LP, a ES335 Custom Shop Birdseye, a 59 Tele and a 2010 Deluxe Telecaster.  As you can see I am stratless, but working on it.

You know I just funnin.  I do wish all nice guitars would come with the option of neck finish as many lose customers because of this.  To be honest, everything I pick up one of my Gibsons it feels strange for a few minutes since I have to play a tele mostly these days.

Man, that Tele is a beaut'   ........
I picked up a PRS hollow body last week in Sam Ash and I got choked up when I had to leave it......
I've thinned the herd as well, and just can't justify it anymore

You know I just funnin.
Of course I do.....why else would we be here?
Where else can a bunch of washed up old  "axe slingers" get together and share war stories....

official :hijack1:
Once,,, we were playin an outdoor show on top of a flatbed tractor trailer, and the band before me, must have spilled a little beer where I set up.....
Opening song was "Train Kept a Rollin"...two, three, four, WHAM!.....I went down hard on my back and played the opening lead there...didn't put a scratch on my Les Paul, and the crowd loved it....so this stuff is just child's play  :icon_biggrin:

Funny you mention set necks...  I've got to know Ritchie Blackmore's old amp and guitar tech.  Ritchie used to scallop his necks with a kitchen knife.  His tech saw this and told him to let him do it right.  He developed the graduated scallop we see today on his signature guitars.  This was back in the mid 70's.  Very much unlike Malmsteens U shaped gouges in his 80's guitars.  Ritchie was also constantly looking for sustain and tone tweaks.  His tech would set up the guitar (micro tilt disaster from the 70's...) and then hard epoxy the neck to the body.  Both he and Ritchie swears there is a difference.  I don't have the personal "attachments" to attempt that with mine.... or the bank account if something goes wrong.  If you can find one, can I make a suggestion on a Strat?  I've got a made in Japan Ritchie Blackmore signature model from 1997.  I have played and owned a lot of Strats and Strat copies over the years.  There was an early 50's reissue that I liked, but none and I mean NONE, play as nice as this RB model.  I can go all Hendrix on the wang bar and it stays in tune, the neck is SWEET - rosewood, the only real strat neck material....!  All original 70's big head hardware.  Graduated scallop.  Some people dont like it, but once you get used to it, you will never go back.  They are making some RB models now in Mexico, run away...fast!  Find an old MIJ.  Worth every penny.  I've seen them go for around $1500-$2000 if you can find them.

Band stories...there are so many!

Used to play on weekend nights on a big boat that cruised the Mississippi.  Big fight one night and both went overboard.  They survived.

Played a big outdoor festival.  There were about 10K people there.  What was REALLY cool, was I had all four, 4x12 cabs plugged into the Major and just blazing away with my pants flapping with every power chord - pure heaven!  With my bass player's SVT and the keyboard player's miced tube and SS rig, we were were the loudest band of the day.  The guys on the board said they were running out of clean room for the vocals and drums.  Ahhh, the good old days!!!  It was an all day deal with no rhyme or reason with the schedule and the band coming on after us were well known (throughout the area musicians) as a bunch of absolute jerks - lots of talking smack about other bands with little musical ability of their own....  Well, their "signature" thing was to open their gigs with LZ's Rock and Roll (very lame singer and even worse guitar player...).   We got called back for two encores.  The other band was backstage rolling their eyes and talking crap so I said, "We are doing Rock and Roll for the second encore."  We went out and KILLED it.  The crowd was packed around the stage and going nuts but the promoter told us we were done.  The singer and the drummer from the other band jumped us when we came back and an all out rumble ensued.  A couple of cops waded in and pulled everyone apart threatening us with jail if we didn't cool it.  Well, undeterred, they went out and opened with Rock and Roll - and they sucked as usual.  The crowd was like, huh?  Most went to find food, bathroom, and merchandize tents.  It was hilarious, we walked around in the front of the mostly deserted stage and acted like we were looking for people (looking around very animated with our hand shading our eyes).  They were all mouthing some very horrible things at us!!  We were terrible! :icon_biggrin:
