First post and first build
« on: March 11, 2014, 10:25:28 am »
Hi folks just wanted to drop a line and say hello and introduce myself! The name is Joey. I'm going to post a few pics of my first build so I can get some input from the experienced builders! Any help or any advice would be awesome!

Welcome, Joey -

Nice amp, and thanks for the pictures.  Do you have a schematic drawn for it?  Any sound clips?

You are in the company of a fine lot of builders, and Doug (EL34) can provide your parts needs.

Looks nice. Is that a Hoffman AB763 without the normal channel?
A schematic, layout, and hi-rez pics are very useful for troubleshooting your amp. Don't wait to be asked. JUST DO IT!

Hi Jack, I bought everything from Mr. Doug minus a few things! I have to give props to Doug for running the best info and parts site out there! Hands downs! The build is Doug's ab763 layout with verb and vibrato! I bought 20 watt transformers for the deluxe version. Those pics were taken as of last night and that's where I'm at. Few more things to do before testing!

Thanks guys it makes me proud! I have a few questions about the ab763 deluxe version. Doug's layout is for the super reverb and it uses a 4.7 & 1k dropping resistors. Deluxe uses 2 10k's. Do I need the 10k for a more of a voltage drop or is it fine the way it is? I might try 6l6's one day but not right off till I get it going first!

Is it ok to have my 6.3 artificial tap ground coming from my phase inverter heaters to the board?

It'll be fine as is. I used 10Ks in mine but I doubt I would be able to hear a difference if I had used 4.7K/1K.

Is there anything anybody sees that could pose a problem?

Hello and Welcome from Platefire. Great job for your first build. You've got a very good start! The only thing I noticed off hand as it appears that your overly cautious about leaving extra slack in your wire runs. I know the feeling, you want to have some extra slack in case you need it. I've gotten better at it because the shorter the runs you can accomplish in most cases is better. Also when you have many wires close together I try to give them a little breathing room/seperation if possible. I've got a single channel AB763 DR with the bias vibroto built into an old Peavey Pacer and it's just a great amp--you will enjoy. If you want a good example of perfect lead dress and layout, just go to Sluckey's site and just look at some of his projects---and there are plenty more on this forum that has near perfect examples--most friendly and helpful amp forum on the planet--and beyond!   :happy1: :happy1: :happy1:

Thanks and your right about being overly cautious! I've tried to be really neat about the wires but it seems like when you start adding components it just grows, lol! I really didn't think this building venture would be so addictive!
