Tone stack master volume VS PPIMV
« on: August 22, 2015, 05:45:35 pm »
I want to add a master volume following my tone stack rather than the PPIMV that I have been using. The PPIMV takes more time and requires more wiring in which could be more problems. But I like the tone I get in the amp with the PPIMV. Will it drastically affect my tone or operation of the amp switching from one to the other?

That's probably mostly a matter of personal preference and results may vary depending on the circuit. Both types work well. I use the pre PIMV  on my plexi style builds. It allows me to blend the bright and normal channels using the volume controls for the tone I want. Then the MV sets the overall volume level. I like it. Some prefer the post PIMV.

Which amp do you want to do this to?

I was thinking of trying it on a few to see the difference. Ac30 and 2204. Ac30 all I've done was post. And 2204 all I've done was pre. I figured it would be a matter of opinion but just wondered if it were a huge noticeable difference.

I think you will notice a big difference in the 2204 because the distortion from the PI is a big part of the sound.

All the stock 2204s I've seen have a master between the tone stack and the input to the PI. I think the distortion from the cascaded preamp stages is the big part of that sound.
