First build tranny ?? (ao-44)

Hi, just joined today, posted a hello in the intro forum and also asked about the possibility of using a Hammond ao-44 to build a Plexi 6v6 - I saw that sluckey did it with an ao-43 and was hoping the -44 is close in design.... I also have an ao-29 amp and an old Magnatone MP1 that I can rob from if needed....  was planning on doing a SE for a first build but the layout and schematics on sluckeys site make me feel like I could go bigger with a little help...... thanks for any advice......

This is a great site with some very knowledgeable people willing to help.  My first advice is not to steal from the Magnatone.  A vintage amp should be kept intact.  I made some changes to a silver faced Super Reverb that sounded good but wasn't a blackfaced Super Reverb.  Made changes to make it look like a blackfaced amp and reduced the value of the amp.  Best to leave vintage guitar amps alone in my opinion with the exception of repairs to make them playable.

Thanks Mike, yeah, I agree on the Maggie, I've been working on it for a while and finally got it to play, but it needs the caps replaced and the reverb doesn't work but I think I need to mod it a bit for some gain and tone ......  pretty sure there is a killer amp in there somewhere although it doesn't have the pitch shifting tremelo like some of the more desire able Maggie's....

There's a big difference between the AO-43 and AO-44. That PT in the AO-44 is too little for a Plexi 6V6. But you could do a Plexi 6GW8.

From the you tube post I heard it is already a great blues amp when working properly.  Best to try to get the amp working with its existing circuitry in my opinion.  John Mayer might record his next CD using one and your amp would be worth a lot of money if it is not modified.  Just my two cents worth.

If you are gonna use the PT from the AO-29 just use it's OT also. They're already paired for a push-pull 6V6 amp.

I've never seen such a comparison. You can find a lot of schematic links to Hammond organs on Captain Foldback's website. Don't confuse Hammond organs with Hammond Manufacturing (transformers). They are not the same company.

Ooops.    I did not know that.....     can you point me to some info so I can learn which trannys to use where so I don't have to keep bugging you guys?

AO-29 iron will build a Plexi 6V6. Or you can get an AO-43 like I did. Or you can build Hoffman's Plexi 6V6 and use the iron he sells. Or you can go to Mark Huss's website and read about the iron he used.

I believe the -43 and -44 use the same OT: AO-24158 0.  So if the -29's is different (I don't know if it is or not), and you want to use the same one that sluckey used in his Plexi6v6, you can rob the one off the -44 that you have.

The -43's PT is no. AO-24157-1, so not the same as what you report is on your -29.  But, as sluckey points out, it will be fine to use since the -29 is a 2x6v6 amp already.
